Earth-7642/Earth-Crossover Chronology

Post by vanhornluke » Wed Feb 22, 2017 1:49 pm

Here's my attempt to figure out chronologies for Earth-7642 (informally known as Earth-Crossover). This Earth presents some challenges:

1) Because of the legalities, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get an official handbook entry or index breakdown of these stories, or even official clarification of exactly which stories are set on Earth-7642. Because of this, I’ve followed marvunapp’s lead (the closest we’ll probably ever get to an official discussion: http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/eart ... verall.htm) in treating all shared-Earth stories involving Marvel characters as Earth-7642 stories unless they are incompatible with Earth-7642 continuity. Excluded stories fall into several categories:

1A) Stories involving the 616 versions of characters (all of which should be included in those 616 characters' chronologies), such as DC vs. Marvel, the Devil's Reign event with Top Cow, etc. This also includes stories which, to my knowledge, have never been officially confirmed as involving 616 characters, but make most sense as involving them, since the stories revolve around interdimensional travel:
Dark Shadows #34 (Agamotto and Silver Dagger appear in a crossover with an issue of Dr. Strange)
Sovereign Seven #2-3 (various X-characters appear in an interdimensional bar)
Shi/Cyblade: The Battle for Independents (Spider-Man appears)
X-O Manowar/Iron Man: In Heavy Metal #1
Iron Man/X-O Manowar: In Heavy Metal #1
Prophet/Cable #1-2
I should also point out that The Punisher Meets Archie #1 has been confirmed by the handbooks as being 616 (this confirmation happened after that marvunapp page was written), so that's why I haven't included it.
1B) Stories incompatible with 7642 continuity:
Batman/Captain America (set on Earth-3839)
Superman vol. 2 #50 (alternate FF appear)
1C) Stories which take place within other companies' characters' continuities:
various stories wherein Marvel characters appear as easter eggs
Donald Duck Superhelden Special (Spider-Man appears)
Justice Inc. #6 (Heinz Kruger appears)
Nagraj aur Jadugar Shakoora (Spider-Man appears)
O Judoka #27 (Nick Fury appears)
Pow #33 (Nick Fury appears)
Raio Negro #15 (Unus the Untouchable appears)
The Shadow and Doc Savage #1-2 (Abraham Erskine is a main character)
Sting of the Green Hornet #2 (Captain America and the Howlers appear)
1D) Stories which I don't have access to and so can't say for sure which Earth they're set on, although I doubt for various reasons that they're 7642:
Pow! Biff! Pops!
The Totally Stonking, Surprisingly Educational and Utterly Mindboggling Comic Relief Comic
various Italian crossover stories with Rat-Man

2) I'm limited to English. This means I had to read the following comics in English translation:
Almanaque do O Globo Juvenil 1964 (published in Portuguese, English translation in Alter Ego vol. 3 #52-60)
Brutus Magazine #790 (published in Japanese, English translation in Free Comic Book Day 2015: Secret Wars)
FRaU Magazine #504 (published in Japanese, no English translation available I'm aware of, but some English-language articles online about it at least let me know the names of two of the characters within)

3) 4) I know MCP’s position is to not track non-Marvel characters. However, I think this Earth’s continuity represents what should be considered an exception, especially since it otherwise wouldn’t be clear whether or not to include characters introduced for the first time in these stories.

4) I tried to limit myself name-wise to what is actually stated in the stories themselves (or intro pages at the beginning describing the characters), since it's possible that these characters don't have entirely the same names as their 616 counterparts (or their counterparts in the DC, Image, etc. Earths). Exceptions to this policy:

4A) When a character is never addressed by name, I used the name of that character's better known non-crossover counterpart
4B) When two characters have the same codename but their real names are never mentioned, I distinguished them using their non-crossover counterparts' real names (specifically, the two different Robins)

5) It's possible that some crossovers published by other companies could also take place on Earth-7642 (e.g., Superman/Aliens), but without any official confirmation of that I think it's safe to limit ourselves to stories with Marvel characters

Extras:

1) In the Badrock/Wolverine crossover, the villain is an interdimensional traveler not from Earth. It's not entirely clear if he's from some other dimension within Earth-7642 or from another reality. Here is his chronology:

Tyrax
BRW 1

2) X-Men/WildC.A.T.S: The Dark Age is not set on Earth-7642. However, it is an alternate future to that Earth (Earth-616 is to Days of Future Past as Earth-7642 is to X-Men/WildC.A.T.S: The Dark Age). Since it is an extension of 7642, I decided to cover it, too, but in this separate section here:

3) To complicate matters, there is yet another unnumbered Earth created at the end of XWDA. It only appears on the last page, and we only see two of its residents, but here are their chronologies, too:

Pryde, Kitty

Wolverine/Logan

I think the Archie/Punisher crossover also took place on this Earth. If I remember right, Punisher was heading to Riverdale at the end of Batman/Punisher, but it has been awhile.

As I mentioned above, the Punisher/Archie crossover has been established by the handbooks to be 616. It takes place in Riverdale, so apparently there's a 616 Riverdale with 616 Archie and gang, but this is the only time we've seen them (unless there are some easter egg appearances, like the 616 Clark Kent).

The ending has Frank leaving Riverdale to go to Gotham City. This doesn't present a problem for the story being 616, though, since we already knew from Captain America Comics #10 that there's a 616 Gotham City.

And I just discovered today further confirmation that there's a 616 Gotham City in Sports Action #14.

In regards to the Punisher meets Archie Cross-over.

Marvel characters belong to Marvel. Archie characters belong to Archie. As both publishers are represented on the cover and both company's characters exist in the same place within the story, I would say this must take place on the Crossover Earth.

So the story presented didn't feature Marvel's version of the Archie characters or the Archie version of the Punisher. The handbook entry must be referring to a similar event that happened on Earth 616, unless the story gives us a vehicle (space warp, magic, anything that would show a universe to universe event) for this event to happen.

That would be to ignore the clear intent of the handbook authors. I suppose that's possible, but I don't see any good reason to do so, especially since this isn't the only case of an intercompany crossover being declared to take place on 616 without any hint of interdimensional travel (I'm thinking specifically of the Spider-Man/Red Sonja crossover with Dynamite, which the Spidey Index says is 616).

Setting aside the Handbooks and Index for the moment, and just looking at the comics:

In Red Sonja's case, there's years and years of evidence that Red Sonja (and Conan, etc.) exists/existed in Earth-616. Also, the mini in question heavily referenced Red Sonja's Marvel Team-Up appearances (heck, it was the basis for the mini's entire story), a pretty clear indication of which version of the character it was intended to be.

I'm unaware of any evidence that says there are Archie characters existing in Earth-616 outside of this one-shot. There's a reference to a city that Batman lives in, but that's not an Archie reference. Yeah, the reference could be twisted/reinterpreted to mean a city that hasn't been seen since 1942 or 1952 or whenever, sure, but it's pretty clear which version of Gotham it was intended to be.

That isn't exactly the same set of circumstances. Or am I missing something?

Back to the Handbooks/Index:

The Handbooks reference Marvel Universe: The End, despite that story ending in a reset/time-wipe/self-cancellation/whatever. Reading this mini, it's clear the story doesn't happen in Earth-616 (but rather some divergent timeline). "Largely similar events" is the idea (in this specific case at least), meaning the Handbooks say that *largely similar events* happened in Earth-616 (without the reset ending, obviously), but not the events as exactly depicted in Marvel Universe: The End (because, well, the ending).

With that in mind, and without any corroborating evidence from other comics, one could say that Punisher vs. Archie (a book where the apparent intention is a world where Marvel characters, Archie characters and DC characters all exist alongside each other) happened in some other universe, while largely similar events happened in Earth-616.

Fun discussion! :)

I entirely agree that it's more natural to treat the Archie crossover as taking place on Earth-7642. However, the only official statement we have on this story comes from the handbooks, which place it on 616. I have no idea why the handbook writers decided to do that, since it's a very odd choice. But nevertheless, that's apparently the official word from Marvel, so I think that's what should be followed. The handbooks and indices aren't infallible (I've found a few mistakes here and there), but apart from clear evidence of an error, I don't see why we should ignore what they say. If Marvel wants to say that this story is 616, then who are we to disagree? If there were something within the story that showed that it couldn't be 616, that would be an error on the handbook's part and would probably require saying that something similar to the story's events occurred on 616, but not the story itself. But that's just not the case here. It's weird, but there's nothing impossible about this story being the only appearance of Archie-616 (just as there's a Savage Dragon-616 who has only one appearance).

Where? I didn't see at that link anything that says something to the effect "MCP will ignore Marvel's official classification of a story as 616 when the following criteria are met..."

You're being facetious, because you don't really expect to find anything like that.

First of all, regarding books published by Marvel, NOT crossover books:

From the FAQ:
Follow-Up Q. How do you determine that a book isn't canon?

The rule of thumb follows a two-step process. In general, a book is canon unless (a) Marvel says it isn't; or (b) it can't be.

Follow-Up Q. But what does that mean?

It's really not difficult. Ask yourself this question: "Has Marvel editorial told us the book is not canon? Yes or No?" If this answer is Yes, Stop. Do not go any further. The book is not canon. If the answer is No, then ask yourself, "Is it possible for the book to be canon? Can this story be placed in each character's chronology?" If the answer is No, Stop. Do not go any further. The book is not canon. If the answer is Yes, then the book is generally considered to be canon. There are special circumstances, such as crossover books, and licensed material, that require that further tests be passed, but these are rare.
Note the distinction here. Marvel doesn't tell us that books are canon. They can only tell us that books are NOT canon. So from that standpoint, you can say that Yes, we ignore Marvel's statements that a book is canon, because we ALREADY ASSUME that it's canon.

But we're careful to say that this policy excludes crossover books.

From the specific portion of the FAQ that I linked to above:
Follow-Up Q. What about intercompany crossovers, like Marvel vs. DC, or Avengers/JLA?

When the Marvel Universe crosses over with another publisher's universe, it must be presented as two separate universes crossing, not existing in the same universe, to qualify for a listing

I wasn't being facetious. I understand, and I agree with that as a general policy. However, that shouldn't ignore when Marvel does in fact state that a story is 616, and that is what has happened with the Punisher/Archie crossover. The handbooks specifically reference the events of that story, integrating them with other 616 events, so Marvel's position is that the story is in fact 616, so it presents an exception to the general rule, just like the Spidey/Red Sonja crossover with Dynamite, or the Spidey/Savage Dragon crossover with Image. The default assumption when dealing with a shared-Earth crossover is that it is not 616 but rather 7642 (unless it can't fit there, either, like the Batman/Cap crossover). However, in those three cases I just listed (and others involving easter eggs, like the Clark Kent who shows up in some Marvel stories), Marvel has told us they are 616 stories, not 7642.

When the Marvel Universe crosses over with another publisher's universe, it must be presented as two separate universes crossing, not existing in the same universe, to qualify for a listing
The above qualification is a completely sensible one.
A) The very nature of these sorts of stories often makes the possibility of their existence in 616 far-fetched at best. It's why the conceit of an "Earth-Crossover" is necessary in the first place.
B) There often isn't any official statement as to these stories' canonicity (perhaps due to the tricky situation of more than one publisher being involved).

However, The Punisher Meets Archie is a somewhat unique case in that:
A) This story could comfortably take place on Earth-616 without stretching believability. (We need only accept the existence of Archie's Riverdale to the extent that it is depicted in this one specific story.)
B) Marvel has officially stated that the events depicted in this story did in fact occur in 616.

Sure you can invoke the "similar events" explanation, but IMO it's unnecessary and silly to override Marvel and reject this story simply to adhere to the otherwise well-conceived terms of your FAQ.
