AMAZING HIGH ADVENTURE #3 (Oct 1986)

1st Story:
By Mike Baron

APPEARANCES:
US Army, Pvt. Johnny Beacham, Castor (camel), Pollux (camel), Sgt. Dodd, Native Americans, Tega, white settlers, Apache war party, horses

SYNOPSIS:
1874, Fort McCutcheon, Arizona Territory: Two camels, Castor and Pollux, are delivered as an Army experiment in whether they would work better than horses in the hot southwest. Sgt. Dodd and Pvt. Johnny Beacham are ordered to begin training with the camels. Dodd finds riding them difficult and has to tie himself into the saddle. An Apache raiding party led by Tega begins attacking white settlers, so the Army is ordered to stop him. They fail, and Tega succeeds in cutting Fort McCutcheon off from outside assistance. Dodd and Beacham are ordered to take the camels during the night through the flats in the hope that the Apache won’t be patrolling that area (it’s too far for horses without water). They’re wrong, and the Apache ambush them. Dodd is killed by an arrow through the back, but since he is tied into the saddle, his corpse remains in the saddle, pistol still clutched in its fist, as the camel races off into the wilderness. The Apache chase Beacham and kill his camel. Instead of killing him, they decide to take his canteen and leave him for dead. Beacham survives, though, but cutting into the camel and using its guts to make another canteen and drink the water the camel had stored within. He manages to stagger into Tuscon and pass on word of the war party. Reinforcements are dispatched and chase Tega and his men into Mexico, rescuing Fort McCutcheon. Beacham is promoted to corporal, but he has had his fill of Army life and musters out, becoming a scout.
1877: Tega returns from Mexico and begins raiding again. The Army calls in all of their scouts and orders them to locate Tega. Beacham finds Tega’s trail, but he is captured before he can return and report. Tega recognizes him and announces that this time Beacham won’t survive the encounter. Before Tega has the chance to kill him, a camel with a mummified corpse in the saddle bursts into camp, terrifying the Apache. Tega throws his spear into the corpse which shakes the pistol in its grip, firing and killing Tega. Beacham is left behind and marvels at what has just happened. In the coming years he will occasionally hear stories about a half-man/half-monster that roams the desert.

2nd Story:
By Steve Englehart

APPEARANCES:
French Army, British Army, Napoleon Bonaparte, horses, Mameluke (pet monkey), Cruard, Francis, Jean-Paul, Ahmad

SYNOPSIS:
1798: Napoleon’s forces beat back an attack by the British in Egypt. The French troops are exhilarated. Napoleon is also enjoying himself, all the more because he has taken a local monkey, Mameluke, as a pet. That night, a French sentry is silently killed. The attack appears to have been some kind of wild animal, so the next night the guards are increased. Three are still killed, so on the third night Napoleon himself takes guard duty, determined to kill this animal. Eventually he is attacked, but it is not an animal. Two Egyptian assassins attack him, but he easily kills them. Taking the garb of one of the assassins, Napoleon walks back to the British lines, guessing that they hired the Egyptians. Sure enough, they allow him into the camp, but before he can walk far, Mameluke suddenly arrives, apparently having been bored or lonely. Napoleon is forced to kill Mameluke to keep him quiet, but it’s too late, his cover blown. He kills two British guards and escapes back to his own lines, but his joy is gone. Not long after, the French campaign in Egypt fails, and this presages Napoleon’s future losses.

NOTE:
I have to wonder if the two French sentries named Jean-Paul and Cruard are intended to be the same characters as in issue #2. Englehart was the author of both stories, so he may have intended this connection, but I didn’t see anything that would definitely establish that. It would be quite a coincidence if that weren’t the case, though, so I’m going to assume these are the same characters. As a bonus, that would help pin down the timing of the story in #2. This story in #3 has to take place before the story in #2, since in that story Jean-Paul and Cruard die. Apparently, after the French invasion fails, Jean-Paul and Cruard either remained behind or sometime later returned to Africa.

3rd Story:
By Mike Baron

APPEARANCES:
Dewa Njoman, Ida Bagus, Leper, Rolf, Hoerst, Pu Li, Col. Takimoto, Japanese Army

SYNOPSIS:
FLASHBACK 1:
1935, Jakarta: Dewa Njoman and Ida Bagus study kung fu from a Japanese sensei. One night they go to a local bar, but racist Dutchmen start a fight. Dewa quickly ends the fight with an amazing display of his skills.
FLASHBACK 2:
1939, Burma: Dewa and Ida have been studying with the great Wang Chun master Pu Li. They agree to deliver a message for him, knowing that they risk being caught by the occupying Japanese forces. Sure enough, they are caught. Fortunately, the Japanese commander, Col. Takimoto, is quite proud of his karate skills, so they challenge him to a martial arts duel. If they win, they are free to go. Takimoto agrees and the next morning fights Dewa. While Takimoto is quite skilled, he is no match for Dewa and is killed. Dwa and Ida walk free.
1978: Dewa and Ida, now old men, think back on times when they were young and hotheaded. As they walk out to harvest rattan to sell to Japanese tourists, are attacked by a tiger. They both fight back and manage to mortally wound the tiger. Unfortunately, they both sustain lethal wounds as well. As they lie dying, they agree it is a good day, and they can both die happy, having lived full lives.

4th Story:
By Mark Wheatley

APPEARANCES:
George Rogers Clark, British soldiers, American revolutionary soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
FLASHBACK 1:
George Rogers Clark leads men against the town of Kaskaskia during the Revolutionary War.
FLASHBACK 2:
George Rogers Clark leads men in an attack on Vincennes during the Revolutionary War.
1807: George Rogers Clark receives a letter from Thomas Jefferson informing him that he will not be compensated for his expenses during the Revolutionary War. Clark gets himself drunk and contemplates suicide. He begins hallucinating old friends and enemies, but he eventually decides not to kill himself, drinking himself into a stupor.

Unbeknownst to his commanding officers, he was a Navy commander during WW2, but due to a technicality was unable to resume his position in Korea. Thus, he enlisted with the army. Knowing the army’s problem with North Korean repair shops that can’t be shelled from the air due to overhanging cliffs, Davis uses his position to order a large number of small boats and outboard motors. When they arrive at the Army supply depot, he shrugs them off as a mistake. A few days later he suggest to Col. Lawrence Miller that since they have the boats, why not use them to attack the North Korean repair ships by river? His plan is approved and the attack by “the army’s navy” is a success, prompting the Navy to have Davis transferred back to them and placed in charge of their small craft division.

American troops use the confusion to rush in and take out the rest of the enemy soldiers.

2nd Story:
By Paul Newman

APPEARANCES:

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Saulpaugh, Col. Howard Kennedy, Sgt. Alfred Dayton, U.S. Marines, Michael Saulpaugh, Gen. Piu-Ho, Walter Remonds, Sgt. Joe Peroni, , Maj. Edgar Lee, Reds, Pvt. Lum-Hux, Doctor Willard Pearson

SYNOPSIS:
Michael Saulpaugh is a U.S. Marine serving in Korea. Ever since he wrote a play about a Martian visiting Earth while in high school, he has believed he might really be a Martian. Because of the political pull of his parents, he has permission to keep his Martian costume with him while serving. One evening he puts his costume on while enjoying a beach alone. Suddenly, Red commandos emerge from the sea. A fight breaks out, but the metal in his costume keeps him safe until other marines arrive and kill the Reds.

NOTE:
Interestingly, while talking to Michael, one of the Marines refers to Atlantis and the possibility that it might invade the surface world. The way this is written, it’s apparently widespread knowledge that he assumes Michael will be aware of. This can be taken as an indication that Namor’s invasion of the surface world and flooding of Manhattan is still well-known in the 50s. :-)

4th Story:
By Paul Newman

APPEARANCES:
Pvt. Janis, Reds, Sgt. Dawes, U.S. Army

SYNOPSIS:
Pvt. Janis and Sgt. Dawes drive a jeep with a mounted rocket launcher. Every time they fire, they need to quickly move, since the smoke and fire give away their position to Red artillery. Suddenly, after launching a rocket the jeep won’t start. Thinking quickly, Dawes resets the laucher so that the force of a rocket launch will hit a large rock the jeep is parked in front of. This application of Newtonian physics is enough to push the jeep enough for it to roll downhill and away from the incoming artillery shells.

Sgt. Ward, Lt. Bell, U.S. Army, Pete, Greg, Louis, Lucas, Red horde

SYNOPSIS:
Lt. Bell is a shiny new lieutenant, replacing a much-beloved lieutenant who was killed in action. The men don’t like him much and none volunteer when he asks for men to scout behind enemy lines. He won’t order anyone on such a dangerous mission, so he goes by himself. Soon the Red horde attacks, but Bell learned their intentions and is able to return and warn his men in time. He’s wounded in the fight, but his men risk their lives to save him. His courage has earned the men’s respect.

MAN COMICS #24 (Mar 1953)

By ?

APPEARANCES:
U.S. Army, Haddon, Commies, Andy

SYNOPSIS:
A group of 406 U.S. infantrymen are ordered to attack 20,000 Commies in order to distract from the massive U.N. invasion of Korean at the beginning of the war. 2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Com. Welton, U.N. sailors, Carroll, Bazer, Hyatt

SYNOPSIS:
A U.N. submarine attacks and destroys a Red submarine guarding a harbor in North Korea. Shore batteries fire on the sub and a delayed-fuse shell hits the sub. Figuring they have about five minutes, Hyatt dives underwater and pries the shell loose before it explodes. The other sailors are amazed, but Hyatt explains that he was high-dive champion in high school and so has a well-developed lung capacity which allows him to stay underwater longer than the average man.

SYNOPSIS:

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Sgt. Kane, U.S. Army, Reds, Maj. Summers, Lt. Cal Franklin

SYNOPSIS:
Sgt. Kane is a battle-hardened veteran, fighting in every major battle in Korea. But one day, he finds it difficult to move on, crying himself at night. Worried he’s become a coward, he begins to lose his self-respect, which is all he has, since he’s poor with no family. Major Summers notices this and has famed hero Lt. Cal Franklin pretend to have battle fatigue in order to explain to Kane that he isn’t a coward. He’s just been fighting too long and has battle fatigue. Kane’s spirits are lifted as he’s taken to a military hospital before being sent home. Summers congratulates Franklin on his acting, unaware that Franklin wasn’t acting.

NOTE:
This is actually a pretty cool story about soldiers with PTSD, back before that term was in use.

COMBAT KELLY #33 (Oct 1955)

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Napoleon Bonaparte, horses, French Army, Prussian Army, Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Arthur Wellesley, British Army

SYNOPSIS:
Waterloo! Napoleon is defeated.

NOTE:
I only summarized this one story, since it’s unconnected from Combat Kelly. I figured there was no point in summarizing several Combat Kelly stories in a single issue in the middle of his series without doing all the rest (and I’m not up to doing that now!).

The fame goes to his head and he begins to think he doesn’t have to follow the rules everyone else does. One day he is speeding and the cops try to pull him over. They surround the building, so Mark simply stays inside, hoping to wait them out while the construction crew continues its work. 2nd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Chuck, Harry Davis, Kennedy, Dr. Ramsey, the Controller

SYNOPSIS:
Chuck is a newspaper weather reporter. He notices that the temperature is the same over the entire country, which is unprecedented. Each day the temperature rises one degree over the entire country. While most people dismiss this as coincidence, Chuck is convinced this is artificial manipulation of the weather. He sneaks an article on the subject past his editor and is promptly written off as a crank. However, he receives a strange, apparently blank sheet of paper in the mail. Shortly afterward, government agents interview Chuck. They are able to determine that the sheet of paper isn’t really blank and is an encoded message from the famed meteorologist Dr. Ramsey. He has been kidnapped by aliens and pressed by the Controller into operating a device on an asteroid that is sucking the moisture out of Earth’s atmosphere and will wipe out human crops. The government sends a rocket to the asteroid to rescue Dr. Ramsey and destroy the alien device. Shortly afterward the weather returns to normal.

3rd Story:
By Carl Wessler

APPEARANCES:
Jeff Dunn, Kip Sanford, Gen. Baxter, allied military forces, Napoleon Bonaparte

SYNOPSIS:
Jeff Dunn, test pilot, takes the experimental new jet X-1A into the upper atmosphere. He breaks the sound barrier and continues increasing his speed until he’s surpassed the speed of light. While flying, he hears a voice announcing plans to eventually invade Britain, Canada, and the United States. Upon his return, Dunn reports the voice to Gen. Baxter, who is very concerned about the threat. He orders Dunn back up along with a tape recorder to record the voices. Dunn succeeds in recording it and Baxter takes the tape to allied leaders. They immediately order a military mobilization to prepare for an invasion, even though they have no idea who the invader will be. After a month no invasion has happened and the cost of the mobilization is huge. To get further proof, Dunn is ordered to take the jet again and this time use a video camera to capture on film whoever the speaker is. When Dunn returns the film is developed and the speaker is revealed as Napoleon. The X-1A flew so fast that Dunn was traveling through time and hearing Napoleon’s plans had he won at Waterloo.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Kim, Alice, Henry, toy soldier, toy soldier’s father

SYNOPSIS:
Alice puts her son, Kim, to bed. Because he hadn’t been a good boy, he can’t sleep with his toy guardian soldier, so Alice places the toy on a shelf across the room. The next morning she wakes Kim up and finds the toy soldier in his bed. She chastises him for getting out of bed during the night to get the soldier, and for then lying about it. The same thing happens the next morning as well. Kim insists he isn’t getting up during the night to get the soldier, but his parents don’t believe him. Finally, Henry, Kim’s father, decides to figure out what is happening by sitting all night in a chair in Kim’s room. During the night a man-sized toy soldier grabs Kim’s soldier off the shelf and says that since the toy has been good that day, he can sleep with his guardian giant (Kim).

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Hunting tribe, Og, Old One, Fishing tribes

SYNOPSIS:
Og and the rest of his hunting tribe gather for the annual ritual of listening to the talking box in a cave. The Old One, keeper of the box, uncovers the box and presses a button. The box plays a recording of a man from the year 1965 warning future generations to seek peace, since nuclear war had destroyed his civilization. Unfortunately, humanity had regressed to the Neolithic level and English was no longer understood. Instead, the hunting tribe took the word “peace” as a sacred word. Chanting “Peace!” they descend on a village to continue their annual warfare on the fishing tribes.

NOTE:
This story was published in 1955, so 1965 was then still future. Obviously, this story is not 616, but I don’t think it’s ever been given an official Earth designation.

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Les Norton, circus performers, elephant, Margie, Tol

SYNOPSIS:
Les Norton is a grunt worker at a circus. He wants to be a clown, but the boss won’t let him, thinking he’s good for nothing but manual labor. However, one day the boss catches Les making a lost little girl laugh while she waits for her mother to find her. He makes Les a clown and immediately takes him out to the stage to occupy the crowd while the acrobats prepare to perform. Since he wasn’t given any time to prepare, Les bombs, eliciting no laughs. Later that night after closing, Les is convinced he could have done a good job if he’d only had a few minutes to prepare. He walks back to the big tent in his clown suit to practice and suddenly finds himself centered in a spotlight. Thinking his coworkers are helping him out, Les puts on a show for whoever is watching. Afterward he wishes he could have done that show before an audience. Unbeknownst to him, the spotlight came not from his coworkers but a spaceship that was hovering over the circus. Tol reports to his superior that humans are friendly and even put on a comedy routine for him, apparently knowing that humor is a universal language.

SYNOPSIS:
Two scouts sneak through British lines to rejoin the last remaining French troops in Canada, reporting that the war is lost. Britain has won and will now rule Canada.

NOTE:
There are no named characters in this story, and so no character chronologies to list below. I suppose we could research where the last French outpost in Canada was and try to identify the fort commander or the scouts with historical individuals, but I don’t know enough about the subject to attempt that.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Andre, French troops, Maj. Maillot, French civilians, German troops

SYNOPSIS:
Andre wants to join the French army to help save France from the Germans, but everyone in his village says he is too young. When French troops come through the town, they also tell Andre he is too young to join. When Germans capture the town and plan to use a decoy wagon full of dynamite to trick the French forces into revealing themselves (instead of the normal wagon full of food and supplies the villagers regularly give), Andre tells the Germans he will have to accompany the wagon, lying that he is a mascot that always accompanies the supplies. The Germans agree, but when the wagon reaches a bridge, Andre shoots the dynamite, destroying the bridge and exposing the Germans. French forces quickly rush out of the woods and capture the Germans. French Maj. Maillot tells Andre he can join up, since if he’s old enough to die for France, then he’s old enough to live and fight.

When the U.S. Navy begins bombardment of the island, the Americans attack from the jungle and quickly overwhelm the surprised Japanese. Nagata is captured before he can commit suicide. During interrogation, he demands to know how the Americans knew he was there. TALES TO ASTONISH #13 (Nov 1960)

1st Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Leslie Evans, Alice Evans, Groot, townspeople, walking trees

SYNOPSIS:
Groot lands on Earth and announces that he plans to take a small town and its townspeople back to Planet X to experiment upon. The police can’t stop Groot, as their guns are useless. However, Leslie Evans, a local scientist, breeds a small colony of termites and lets the loose on Groot, which defeats him and saves the town.

NOTE:
It’s not explained exactly how Groot is defeated, since we still see him after he’s been stopped, so he wasn’t entirely consumed. This story is in Groot’s chronology, but Leslie and Alice don’t have chronologies, so while I won’t include Groot below, I will list them.

2nd Story:

Reprinted from Strange Tales of the Unusual #5.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Bar patrons, Carl Hanson, Indian townspeople, Lamas

SYNOPSIS:
Carl Hanson, a thug, overhears a bar patron brag that he has a picture of the abominable snowman, proof that he exists, and plans to sell the picture to an American magazine. He laughs that he was warned the picture is cursed, but doesn’t believe in such things. Hanson decides to mug the man and steal the picture. Then he heads to the Himalayas, thinking that if he actually captures the snowman, he’ll be able to make much more money than he could get simply selling the photo. He asks various villagers where to find the snowman, but everyone is terrified of the curse and won’t tell him. He decides to search on his own, but over the weeks he runs out of provisions and is battered by storms. He refuses to give up, vowing to live off the land until he finds the snowman. Unbeknownst to him, the curse has taken effect: Hanson has transformed into the very snowman shown in the photo!

NOTE:
Hanson apparently has other appearances in Uncanny X-Men vol. 3 #33 and in the recent Monsters Unleashed series, but I haven’t read them and so haven’t tried to break them down in his chronology. Someone else at MCP is welcome to add those appearances if this info is correct: http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/abominab.htm

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Napoleon Bonaparte, Gustav, French soldiers, woman carved from wood

SYNOPSIS:
1799: Gustav is a talented sculptor from wood who makes a living carving mastheads for pirate vessels. His fame reaches Napoleon, who asks him to carve a figure of a beautiful woman for his ship to remind him of his believed Josephine while at sea. Gustav complies but weeks later, once he’s finished carving the woman, he is astonished when she speaks. She says she loves him but they can never marry, since she is wooden while he is a man of flesh and blood. Gustav delays Napoleon’s troops who have come to collect the woman and visits a local Gypsy woman. She confirms to him that she has a potion that can turn flesh to wood and so Gustav steals it. Outraged, she pronounces a curse upon him. Drinking the potion, Gustav returns to his shop and writes a note to Napoleon that he has crafted two figures that should be kept together. However, once he begins to turn into wood, the woman is transformed into flesh. Now they still can’t marry, but she hopes that someday the Gypsy woman will lift the curse.

NOTE:
The wooden woman is never given a name, so I haven’t listed her in the chronologies below, since I wouldn’t know what to call her.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Linus Whitehead, Joe, Frankie

SYNOPSIS:
Joe, a tv repairman, is fascinated when he hears about Prof. Linus Whitehead’s theory that televisions can connect Earth to another dimension. Joe spends six months experimenting with a television until he finally finds the correct settings and opens a portal in the tv screen. However, monsters try to come through and drag Joe into the other world. He quickly turns off the tv, closing the portal. Now he worries whether or not what he saw was real.

NOTE:
Napoleon’s first published Marvel appearance was in Red Raven Comics #1. I’m not sure what’s going on with that issue at MCP, since it’s listed in the chronologies for Red Raven, Makkari, and King Solomon, but not for Napoleon, Thomas Edison, Magar the Mystic, Harry Houdini, and many others that appear in this issue. Since I wasn’t sure what’s going on with this issue, I didn’t provide any breakdowns, but I did put it in Napoleon’s and the Duke of Wellington's chronologies below.

APPEARANCES:
U.S. Army, Haddon, Commies, Andy

SYNOPSIS:
A group of 406 U.S. infantrymen are ordered to attack 20,000 Commies in order to distract from the massive U.N. invasion of Korean at the beginning of the war. They’re undersupplied (and given the wrong artillery shells), but their courage allows them to use phantom attacks for seven hours, causing enough confusion and fear to allow the U.N. forces to establish a beachhead.
I'm confused- what massive UN invasion? Are you thinking of Inchon?

Or did they get their history wrong?

Inchon is mentioned on a newspaper page, so that may have been the intent. The details may be historically wrong, but I don't think historical accuracy was a main concern for many of the writers of these stories.

Affirmative.
I can't promise you that things will improve, if we make changes;
I can promise you that they won't improve, if we don't.
