The next morning, Dan wakes up and sees that somehow the house has moved during the night to yet another location. This continues for several nights, each morning finding the house somewhere else. Eventually the house moves back to its original location. Not wanting to deal with it, the highway is built around the house rather than demolishing it.

By ?

After a while, Fred and Betty are concerned that Pop hasn’t returned, but he eventually calls them from another town, informing them that the rug is magic and he flew it. They don’t believe him, even when he returns, but when the telephone operator calls and explains that they’ll have to take a long distance charge for their last phone call, they realize Pop was telling the truth.

3rd Story:
By Tom Sawyer

APPEARANCES:
Partygoers, Mr. Drexel, Jarvis, Ken

SYNOPSIS:
An alien attends a costume party, but he’s unable to create an original costume, so he copies someone else’s. Unfortunately, the party has a rule that every costume must be unique. He keeps duplicating other costumes, but always raises suspicion when looking exactly like everyone else. When a guest’s diamond necklace goes missing, he is suspected, since the guests don’t know him. He refuses to be searched and leaves (and the guest finds the necklace simply fell into her dress). Reporting back to his ship, he explains that humans don’t like to be copied, so aliens should simply approach them in their natural appearance.

NOTE:
The butler at the party is named Jarvis.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Joseph Harlin, Prof. Norton, Hendrick, crowds, Christopher Columbus, Queen Isabella I

SYNOPSIS:
Prof. Norton is informed by his doctor that he is sick and has only about three months to live. He decides that instead of dying as an obscure history professor that he would like to somehow make a mark in history. When his colleague, Hendrick, tells him that he has completed work on a time machine, but that he doesn’t want to announce his success until an upcoming conference, Norton decides to use the machine to travel back in time and accomplish an historic feat before the famous historical figure was able to do so. He decides he will discover the Americas before Columbus, so he travels back in time to Portugal in 1490. Unfortunately, he is unable to convince anyone to finance the expedition. Eventually, ranting to a crowd about undiscovered wealthy lands in the west, he dies. However, in the crowd was Christopher Columbus. He is intrigued by the old man’s claims and decides to take up his cause, eventually meeting Queen Isabella I.

NOTE:
Hendrick’s time machine worked, so I wonder what happened to it.

5th Story:
By Carl Wessler

APPEARANCES:
Larry Watts, Lewis Franklin, Mr. Howard, Everett Franklin

SYNOPSIS:
Larry Watts hears that Lewis Franklin, an old man, is dying. He decides he will impersonate Franklin’s only son, Everett, who is the sole heir to the $10,000,000 fortune. He sneaks into Franklin’s house and steals a picture so that he knows what Everett looks like. He then goes to a plastic surgeon and pays to have himself surgically altered to resemble the photo. The photo is of a very ugly man, but Watts reasons that with all that money he won’t care if he’s ugly. After the procedure he goes to Franklin’s estate, but Franklin’s lawyer immediately can tell that he’s a conman. The photo he stole wasn’t of Everett Franklin, but rather of Lewis when he was a younger man. Everett enters the room and Watts sees that Everett is a near-duplicate of Watts before the plastic surgery!

6th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Mr. Manning, Lewis, Dr. Lawrence

SYNOPSIS:
Lewis mans the radar in an air-traffic control tower. On foggy nights a strange, ghostly plane keeps showing up on radar, but it can’t be contacted. The number on the tail, XL-2 should identify it, but when Lewis tracks down who owns that plane, the owner says it’s still in the hangar. One foggy night, a pilot risks flying in the fog to deliver rare blood packets a baby in town needs to survive. He has trouble and almost crashes into a hangar, but then safely lands. At the same time, a plane crashes elsewhere at the airport. Investigating, they see that the plane has the same number, XL-2, as the one the pilot just flew in on. Lewis realizes that the phantom plane had been waiting on foggy nights for this flight so that it could take the place of the pilot who was supposed to crash in order to save the blood, and thereby the baby.

3rd Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Al Benton, Greek soldiers, Richard the Lionheart, English knights, Christopher Columbus, Norman Hale

Norman Hale was with the Greeks when they stormed the Labyrinth at Gnossos, in Rome when it burned, marched with Richard the Lionheart in the Crusades, and sailed across the Atlantic with Columbus.
SYNOPSIS:
Reporter Al Benton is tasked with getting the life story of the author Norman Hale, a phenomenal new writer of historical fiction. His readers are amazed at his details, almost as if he’d been at the events he describes. Hale is somewhat of a recluse, but Benton eventually tracks him down in the mountains at a hunting cabin. Hale tells his story, explaining that he’s lived over two-thousand years and participated in many historical events. Knowing no one will believe Benton if he reports on what he’s learned, Hale walks away to adopt yet another new identity.

NOTE:
This story is already listed in the chronologies for Hale and Richard the Lionheart, but not any of the other characters.

4th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Restaurant patrons, Bob Hawks, pedestrians, Fat Man

SYNOPSIS:
Reporter Bob Hawks sees a fat man gorging himself at a restaurant. When he’s done eating, the man weighs himself and when he sees that he’s 250 pounds, he breathes a sigh of relief and says he’s “safe.” Curious, Hawks follows the man around, noticing that the man takes notes in an unfamiliar language on the behaviors of people he sees. He also frequently enters restaurants and stuffs his face with fattening foods. Eventually, Hawks wants answers and so he prevents several restaurants from feeding the man by pretending to be the man’s doctor. The man finally gives in and explains that he’s from Saturn and that he needs to keep his weight up because he’s used to a heavier gravitational pull. Hawks doesn’t believe him until he notices that the man has started to float off the ground because he’s lost weight while talking to him.

NOTE:
The text in the story doesn’t name the alien, but the title of the story calls him “The Fat Man,” so that’s what I’ll use to label him in the chronologies below.

5th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Emily, Emily’s mother

SYNOPSIS:
Emily keeps getting in trouble, and her mother has finally had it. She says Emily won’t be able to go out on Halloween, but Emily cries, saying she’s been looking forward to it since it’s the only day they go riding. Archie the Gruesome, Big Joe, firefighters, concertgoers, mayor, governor

Archie is a street sweeper with a fondness for heroes, especially Captain America. Big Joe is also a street sweeper, but he’s envious of Archie’s route, since Archie’s streets always have less trash to clean up than Joe’s. He tries to forcibly make Archie switch streets with him, but Archie’s fisticuff skills stun Big Joe. Seeking revenge, Joe sends in a false fire alarm on one of Archie’s streets, hoping to get Archie in trouble. However, by sheer coincidence there is a fire on that street and Archie saves a woman, becoming a public hero. Joe keeps trying various schemes to get back at Archie, but they all backfire. He takes some consolation, though, when Archie has to clean up all the confetti after a parade for the governor.

12th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Nazis, Fourth Musketeer, horse, bank robbers, bank customers, cops, Paul Krantz, anti-Nazi meeting attendees, Anti-Nazi League

SYNOPSIS:
The ghost of the Fourth Musketeer rises from the grave and resumes a life of flesh in order to defend democracy and liberty from the scourge of the Nazis. Traveling to the U.S., he takes out a Nazi cell attempting to change American public opinion about the Nazis.

NOTE:
According to the official index entry for Avengers #200: D’Artagnan (musketeer, last in MClas #12, ’76, possibly chr next as Fourth Musketeer in Comedy #10, ’42).” This makes sense and seems to have been the intention of whoever the author was (else why call the character specifically the “fourth” rather than something like “The Musketeer”?), so that’s what I’m going to go with, but, of course, MCP is free to disagree.

13th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Monstro the Mighty, U.S. Army, Hook, Maj. Crash, Little Poison, Roman soldiers, French soldiers, Napoleon Bonaparte, Mars, Nazi agents

FLASHBACKS:
Monstro learns war serving in Caesar’s Gallic Wars, then with El Cid, Joan of Arc, and Napoleon, before he tires of war. His father, Mars, is infuriated and hits him over the head so hard that he travels through time to the 20th century.
SYNOPSIS:
Monstro causes destruction and panic on the east coast of the U.S. until Maj. Crash is able to talk with him. Monstro is tired of war and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Little Poison, a Nazi agent, escapes Crash’s custody with a top secret coding device, so Monstro helps Crash track down and capture her.

NOTE:
No explanation is provided for why Monstro is a giant in the 20th century, since he clearly isn’t one in the past. I missed this story when I broke down all of Napoleon’s appearances. Also, I don’t know enough about Mars’ (Ares) history to be able to place this flashback appearance of him. Hopefully someone else can do so for me. It would be listed as COMEDYC2 10/13 (4:9)-FB.

14th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Sandy Skinose

SYNOPSIS:
Sandy Skinose, private eye, has a dream about being hired by an eccentric rich man to find his ivory bean shooter.

NOTE:
Sandy apparently has an assistant named Tubby Watts, but he only appears in Sandy’s dream, so that’s not a real appearance.

15th Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Nazis, Maxie Stein, Victor, Gus Weber, Warren Zumwald, Hans Brauer, Kurt Erzberger, Corp. Braemer, Victory Boys

SYNOPSIS:
Victor meets the Victory Boys, a group of orphans hiding from the Nazis. They volunteer to help Victor rescue his father from a Nazi camp before his execution the next morning. The sneak into the camp, beat up a bunch of Nazis, and succeed in escaping with Victor’s dad. The dad says he has to return to the fight, but Victor decides to stay with the Victory Boys and fight the Nazis their own way.

NOTE:
Yikes! Maxie is one vicious, messed-up little kid. The Victory Boys have another appearance in USA Comics #5. Hopefully someone will break down that issue soon.

16th Story:
By?

APPEARANCES:
Kid Columbus, pedestrian, Spanish townspeople, Queen Isabella I, King Ferdinand II, courtiers, Alfonso Amigez, minions

SYNOPSIS:
A man in Brooklyn reads a magic book that includes a formula for time travel. He decides to try it out and finds himself transported back in time to Spain, 1492. Since he’s so odd to the people of the time, he’s brought to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He adopts the moniker “Kid Columbus” and explains that he is from the future, introducing various futuristic items like cigarette lighters and harmonicas to them. They are impressed and ask him to introduce more stuff from the future, and so Spain soon has newspapers, taxis, pin-ball machines, and baseball. This makes him an enemy of the court magician, Alfonso Amigez, so Amigez has the Kid knocked out and pressganged into the crew of an exploration vessel, the Venturo. The Kid remembers from his history that the Venturo was lost, so he’s concerned about what he may face soon.

NOTE:
This is a funky one. It’s kinda hard to believe that all those futuristic inventions Kid Columbus introduces would be forgotten, but I suppose that’s not too hard to swallow (much stranger things have happened in 616 stories). The Kid refers to Captain America as a real person, so that should dispel doubts that this is a 616 story. To my knowledge, this was the only Kid Columbus story, so we never found out what happened to the Venturo.

17th Story:
By Reney

APPEARANCES:
U.S. Army, Wheezy, Pvt. Breezy

SYNOPSIS:
Wheezy is a dog who lives at a U.S. Army camp with Private Breezy. He’s not allowed in the mess hall, but Breezy and the Sarge both sneak food for him.

18th Story:
By Reney

APPEARANCES:
U.S. Army, Wheezy, captain’s dog, Pvt. Breezy

SYNOPSIS:
Wheezy gets in a fight with the captain’s dog, and when the dog tries to run away, Wheezy fights the captain, too. Of course, he gets in trouble.

NOTE:
Wheezy and the captain’s dog are apparently both able to think and speak in English. This isn’t unprecedented, though, since Top Dog and Heathcliff are two other 616 animal characters that can speak English (or maybe I should say that Wheezy and the captain’s dog are the precedents for Top Dog and Heathcliff!).

19th Story:
By Reney

APPEARANCES:
Wheezy, U.S. Army, Pvt. Breezy

SYNOPSIS:
The sarge tells some grunts, including Pvt. Breezy, to fill up a truck with sand and bring it back. Wheezy goes along and tries to help, since he can dig, but he just gets in the way. On the way back Wheezy distracts Breezy and he accidentally runs over the Sarge’s foot and dumps some sand on him, resorting in a punishment of having to peal potatoes.

20th Story:
By Reney

APPEARANCES:
Wheezy, U.S. Army, squirrel, Pvt. Breezy

SYNOPSIS:
Wheezy chases a squirrel out on the shooting range. Pvt. Breezy and the Sarge rush out on the range to try to grab Wheezy away from the danger, but they crash into each other. Wheezy is put in a cage to keep in out of trouble.

21st Story:
By Reney

APPEARANCES:
Pvt. Breezy, U.S. Army, Wheezy

SYNOPSIS:
Wheezy gets everyone in trouble by interrupting their handshakes.

22nd Story:
By Art Gates

APPEARANCES:
Squirrels (baseball team), Donkeys (baseball team), Cannonball Brown, fans, shark, Buggsy Boodle, Freddie, Boris Bombovitch

SYNOPSIS:
Cannonball brown is the best baseball player ever. The outfielders have to stand miles away in order to have any chance of catching one of his hits. Buggsy Boodle was the hot player until Cannonball showed up, so he contrives to have Boris Bombovitch added to an opposing team as a pitcher. When Cannonball’s turn to bat comes up, Bombovitch is substituted in and he throws a bomb for the first pitch. It explodes, blowing up the stadium and cooking a ham Cannonball had in his pocket.

NOTE:
This is fairly absurd and requires too much suspension of disbelief to be classified as 616. It seems to fit better with the stories in Crazy or Not Brand Echh than 616, so I’m going to say it’s an alternate reality story.
