LA LEGGE DEL WEST (Jul 1959)
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Hank Kreeger, marshal, horses, train passengers, Luke, Kreeger’s men, Dan, Whip McCall, Artemus Brady, bull, Stacey, Jim Hutchinson, Silver Kid/Britt Harmon, Davis Crowder, Bart, cattle

SYNOPSIS:
Three men head for the Snake River in search of the Silver Kid: 1) Hank Kreeger, who escapes from a marshal’s custody; 2) Whip McCall, a young gunfighter looking to make a name for himself; 3) Artemus Brady, a Pinkerton detective. The Silver Kid is accused of helping Kreeger steal a government payroll shipment, only to then steal it from Kreeger all for himself. Unfortunately, a year ago the Silver Kid was seen falling from a cliff into the Snake River and apparently drowning, since his body was never recovered. However, rumors persist that a young man who was pulled from the river with amnesia is really the Silver Kid. On Jim Hutchinson’s ranch, Britt Harmon is that young man. After Brady arrives, Hutchinson admits that he knows Harmon is the Silver Kid, since he was found wearing a gunbelt with silver-handled guns. Whip McCall arrives and suggests that if they take Harmon to the cliff where he fell into the river, it might jog his memory. While there, he forces Harmon into a duel, but before they can draw Kreeger arrives and shoots McCall in the back. He wants the government payroll or else. Harmon can’t remember where it is, though, and so Kreeger shoots at him, starting a cattle stampede in the valley below. When a posse led by Hutchinson arrive, Kreeger flees on his horse, but the horse stumbles and Kreeger is thrown into the stampede and trampled. Before he dies, he admits that the Silver Kid never did help with the initial theft of the payroll, and he only took it in order to turn it over to the authorities. A member of the posse finds the payroll hidden in some brush nearby, so Brady decides to return it to the government and report that he never found the Silver Kid.

NOTE:
Stacy is Jim Hutchinson’s granddaughter. It’s possible that her last name is also Hutchinson, but that’s never stated (and if she’s the daughter of Hutchinson’s daughter rather than a son, then she’d probably have her father’s last name rather than her mother’s, but we don’t know that, either). This is a relatively recently discovered “lost” late 50s Atlas story that was never published in the US, but somehow made its way over to Italy for initial publication (similar to Wild Angels decades later). For more info, see http://timely-atlas-comics.blogspot.com ... s-and.html and http://kirbymuseum.org/blogs/effect/201 ... ake-river/ (which is where I got the date of publication from). I don’t read Italian, so I read the Australian version that’s in English (I don’t know if this version publishes the original American version or translated the Italian version back into English) and reproduced at the timely-atlas-comics blog linked above.
