Now that we’re past using Roy’s chronology I’ll be spelling out placement clues and reasoning in more detail. If anyone thinks they have a better placement for these stories PLEASE say something. I’d rather hammer it all out now in the forums before they end up on the chronology pages.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #1 (August 1995)
By Chuck Dixon & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Aquilonian army (inc Lucius Vindictus, Daius, Vadis (in fb), Lionus (in fb)), Vanir (inc a witch-queen (also in fb)), Vadis’ slave

FLASHBACK:
Conan gets drunk and breaks a soldier’s jaw (a short time ago). The Vanir witch-queen killed Vadis with magic, the commander of the fort (a little while back).
SYNOPSIS:
In an Aquilonian fortress in Vanaheim, a new commander arrives to replace the previous one. Conan is jailed for assaulting an Aquilonian soldier; he’s a mercenary hired to defend the fort against the Vanir. That night some Vanir sneak in but Conan kills them, despite being chained. The new commander orders Conan to be freed. Soon after the Vanir attack and overtake the fort; Conan escapes with the new commander.

NOTE:
Conan’s in one of his mercenary phases here. Yes, he’s working with the Aquilonian army, but he’s not a soldier in it, he’s been hired. Meaning, this is not the lead-up to him becoming king. Also, they’re not even in Aquilonia. He’s between Cimmeria and Vanaheim in SAVSCO 141 and is doing mercenary things, so before SAVSCO 141 works for me.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Tim Conrad

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Qelda (also in fb), Sassad (also in fb), Pharmuthi (priest of Set, in fb), a warrior (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Qelda was a dancer in Luxor, but when she started dating Sassad, the jealous priest Pharmuthi turned Sassad into a giant serpent with arms. When the priest refused to turn him back Qelda killed him and they fled. They built a giant maze around an oasis they found and lived happily. Qelda read over scrolls she stole to try and find a cure, but with no luck. Recently, a warrior entered the maze and attacked Sassad; he killed the warrior in self-defense.
SYNOPSIS:
In the Stygian desert, Conan finds an oasis surrounded by a giant maze. Entering the maze Conan falls into a pit where he finds a woman fighting a giant serpent with arms. Conan attacks but the woman knocks him out. When he wakes up she (Qelda) tells Conan that the snake-creature (Sassad) is her lover and tells him her story. Conan says he’ll keep their secret and prepares to leave. Sassad tells Qelda to go with Conan so she doesn’t have to live like this anymore. Suddenly he’s turned back into a human. Conan says that by giving Qelda up the spell must have been broken.

NOTE:
Conan mentions that he’s previously fought both kinds of Serpent-Men. He fought Serpent-Men in Stygia in SAVSCO 122, so after that works.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #2 (September 1995)
By Chuck Dixon & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan, circus gladiators (inc Jalla, Ochus, Tolus), Shamar residents (inc Lady Antiva Brosus, Ochus (a different one))

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is a circus pit fighter in the southern Aquilonian city of Shamar, near Ophir. It’s all a show, though; the gladiators aren’t really fighting and they use fake blood in their “deaths.” Impressed with the show, Lady Antiva Brosus pays for Conan to visit her. After they fool around Conan leaves, turning down her offer to have him live with her. Angry, she orders the circus master to put on a real show to the death. Conan and Jalla (his girlfriend) kill all of the others, but Antiva won’t be happy until there’s only one left. They refuse to fight, so an archer kills Jalla. Enraged, Conan climbs out of the arena and kills Antiva. Two weeks later, now in the northlands, Conan holds a funeral for Jalla.

NOTE:
Conan is 32 years old here, which narrows things down nicely for us. He’s in his early 30s in SAVSCO 211/2-212/2, and then he arrives in Ophir in SAVSCO 44 after that. Works for me!

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

This story is already in the MCP.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #3 (October 1995)
By Chuck Dixon & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his crew (inc Scrod, T’liko, Tellerac), King Hrothar’s daughter, Vanir, S’rotha Meer (a kraken), Varax, son of Cularn (mentioned, King Hrothar’s daughter’s betrothed)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is leading a reiver ship on the coast of the far Vanir isles. They rescue King Hrothar’s from some Vanir so they can return her home. They’re being paid well, of course. She doesn’t want to return, because she doesn’t want to marry Varax; Conan doesn’t care. A storm blows them off course and they end up in icy waters where a kraken lives. The crew wants to feed the princess to the kraken and mutiny, so Conan kills everyone and feeds them to the kraken. As they sail away the princess reveals she’s not a virgin and Conan won’t be paid. He decides to go to the spice ports to the south and drop her off.

NOTE:
It says that Conan is 20 years old here, but also that he’s captain of a ship. Conan didn’t start sailing until he met Bêlit, at which point he was 23, give or take. He spent about three years with her, making him roughly 26 when she died. Meaning, he can’t be 20 here, so there goes that clue. Anyway, he’s in Vanaheim in COSAV 1 and with the fort destroyed he’s probably looking for work. After COSAV 1 seems like it works.

2nd Story:

CONAN THE SAVAGE #4 (November 1995)
By Chuck Dixon & Enrique Alcatena

2nd Story:

CONAN THE SAVAGE #5 (December 1995)
By Ian Edginton & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Siobahn Lauchline, Jarabesht residents (inc Akif, Antione de Glasse (also bts in fb) & his leathermen) & guards (also in fb), Torun & his sons, Tara & her father, adventurers, Ovada & her demons (also in fb)

FLASHBACK:
A month ago, demons poison Jarabesft’s water supply, turning people into more demons. The demons are driven out and the city is put on lockdown.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan kills Torun and his sons so he can collect the bounty on them in Jarabesht, a walled city in the northern plains. Meanwhile, Tara enjoys dancing in the rain and is scolded by her father. Suddenly, an armored giant falls from the sky and crashes into dwarf mountain; its blood mixes into the river that flows into Tara’s village. Conan arrives at Jarabesht and catches up with Akif. Conan is recruited to help destroy the rest of the demons. As they travel Conan meets Siobahn Lauchline, a warrior priestess.

NOTE:
After SAVSCO 69 seems like a good spot for this, where Conan is taking odd jobs, and is in an area where lots of people from different places would be.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Geof Isherwood

APPEARANCES:
Conan, “Alu Gazi,” Zhamakand residents (inc the Twelve (inc Othman, Yar Akbar), Maemi-Stova, Saydi, Zilliah, Ahmed Pasha, Shaibar Khan, a beggar), Turanian spy

SYNOPSIS:
In the foothills of the Colchian Mountains, Conan arrives at the city of Zhamakand. He notices a guy being attacked by a group; when he recognizes one of the attackers he jumps in. After the group leaves, Alu Gazi thanks Conan for saving him. Conan notices and amulet on one of the guys he killed, then goes to a tavern where he meets the beautiful dancer Zilliah. He learns the amulet will gain him passage to the city’s treasure. He goes to the palace and is told to secretly guard Shaibar Khan while he takes a meeting. The Khan’s vizier learns Conan stole his amulet and orders him killed.

NOTE:
Based on “The Treasures of Tartary” by REH.

Conan thinks that in his younger days his rashness would move him to a different course of action. So, he’s older and more wisened here. Also, in his travels Conan was most recently in Turan. Also, Conan compares Zilliah’s dancing to that of Atali, Bêlit and Yasmela, so we’re at least after SAVSCO 2 / COB 250. Also, Yezdigerd is king in Turan, so we’re also after SAVSCO 38. The Turanian spy says that now may be a good time to topple Yezdigerd, making me think this is shortly after he’s made king, so shortly after SAVSCO 38.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #6 (January 1996)
By Ian Edginton & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Akif, Siobahn Lauchline, Antione de Glasse, Tara Sidth Alarune, Ovada & her demons

SYNOPSIS:
Conan and co. fight some demons but they’re overpowered and captured. When they wake up they meet Tara Sidth Alarune; she explains that she’s Ovada, a goddess, who was cast out of her realm and now she possesses Tara’s body. Also, she wants to turn Conan into one of her demons. Conan breaks free and releases Siobahn; she realizes they’re inside Ovada’s original giant corpse and set it on fire. As she burns Ovada tries to kill Conan but they kill her instead.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Geof Isherwood

APPEARANCES:
Conan, “Alu Gazi”/Orkhan Bahadur & his warriors, Zhamakand residents (inc the Twelve (inc Yar Akbar), Zilliah, Ahmed Pasha, Shaibar Khan), monstrosities

SYNOPSIS:
Conan escapes his attackers and takes a nap on a roof. He wakes up when Zilliah approaches and he learns the city is under attack. They decide to get the treasure while everyone’s distracted. After some shenanigans, the treasure is dumped into an underground river and Conan has to fight some monstrosities. Conan kills one and they escape. Once outside Conan learns the man he saved is leading the attack on the city, and that Zilliah is his sister.

NOTE:
Based on “The Treasures of Tartary” by REH.

Conan knows Yar Akbar, but I don’t think he’s appeared anywhere else. They fought for control of a group of hillmen once, they say.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #7 (February 1996)
By Chuck Dixon & Gary Kwapisz

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Iron Maidens (inc Persephone, Lupara, Martika, Soraya), Hyborean reivers, giant insects

SYNOPSIS:
In the mountains of the northern plains of the Hyborean Pangea, Conan is being chased by Hyborean reivers. He escapes them and runs into the Iron Damsels. They looking for the Cave of Saureem where they think an ancient treasure is. Following a map they have they quickly find the place. Inside they find a hidden passage, but it closes when Conan and Persephone enter. The other Damsels fall through a trap door. They battle giant insects while the tunnel Conan is in is flooded. Conan and Persephone find the treasure, but its massive and impossible to transport. More flooding reunites them with the other Damsels and they escape. They start running again when the Hyborean reivers arrive.

NOTE:
Conan is in his thirties. Also, Conan has run into the Iron Damsels more than once, making me think this is after SAVSCO 179. It has to be at least after SAVSCO 154, because that’s the first time they’ve seen each other since SAVSCO 111. Also, Conan is in the right geographic area in SAVSCO 133-134, so after that I guess.

2nd Story:
By Rafael Kayanan

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Picts

SYNOPSIS:
At the northern border of the Bossonian Marshes, Conan is alone against the Picts, his group of thieves having already been killed. He battles fatigue as he escapes the Picts chasing him and eventually makes it to safety.

NOTE:
Conan is in northern Bossonia in COB2 1-3, so before that looks good.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #8 (March 1996)
By Mike Baron & Val Mayerik

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Sharyce, Vizier’s guards (inc Tung, Paluga, Capt. Stendryk), caliph’s soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
Conan is chased by the caliph’s soldiers (because he slept with the caliph’s wife) until Conan reaches the steppes. He spots a sheltered city but has to make it across the frozen desert to get there. As he travels he’s forced to eat his horse. When he finally arrives he learns the city’s vizier is cruel and won’t let strangers in. Conan meets Sharyce, who has a plan to get them into the city. She nurses him back to health and he regains his strength. Conan returns to the valley and kills the guards. He and Sharyce enter the city.

NOTE:
Conan ends up in a northern desert here, and so likely starts in or north of Turan. I’m thinking after SAVSCO 189/2 for this one.

2nd Story:
By Neil Hansen

APPEARANCES:
Conan, tavern dancers (inc Shallah, Tofal, Adina, Ralina) & bouncers (inc Corndell), townies (inc a sorcerer/”beggar”), a caravan, castle guards (inc Shandar)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan enters a town and is bothered by a sorcerous beggar that no one else sees. Conan relaxes in a tavern, punches a Brythunian and fools around with a dancer. Now rested, Conan leaves to steal the Living Heart of Shirim-the-Dying, a fancy gem. Conan finds the castle and fights the sorcerer from earlier. He eventually finds the gem and kills the creature guarding it. He escapes the castle guards by jumping in a nearby river. He crawls out and the gem vanishes, returning to the castle. He finds the dancer from earlier at the river bank and says he has quite the story to tell.

NOTE:
Young Conan learned about the gem in Shadizar. After COB 6 seems like a nice spot.

CONAN THE SAVAGE #9 (April 1996)
By Chuck Dixon & Enrique Alcatena

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Princess Khajura, Prince Nakesvara (also in fb), Makaras (in fb), Gopur residents, gods of Bhagobah, tigers

FLASHBACK:
A fog rolled over the city of Gopur and strange creatures, the Makaras, arrived. They built a citadel in the jungle. When they sing at night people are lured away and never return. Prince Nakesvara set out to kill the Makaras, but when he entered their citadel he was changed and unable to speak. The Makaras continue to sing at night, everyone locks themselves in their houses and Nakesvara wanders the streets.
SYNOPSIS:
In Vendhya, Conan fights a tiger and stumbles across the city of Gopur. Inside he hears a terrible noise and passes out. He wakes up and Princess Khjura tells him her story. She asks Conan to check out the citadel and see if he can find out what happened to her brother. He sets forth and fights the tiger again before finding it. Conan sees Nakesvara enter the citadel; inside, Conan watches as he prepares to sacrifice his sister. Conan jumps in after her and discovers the singing is coming from giant slug creatures. He chops them all up into pieces. They leave and see Nakesvara is also dead.

NOTE:
Conan spends time in Vendhya in SAVSCO 234-235, 16-19, 179/2, and is near it in SAVSCO 95, 175, 103, 173. After SAVSCO 19 looks like it works.

2nd Story:
By Chuck Dixon & Enrique Villagran

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Red Sonja, Aquilonian army (inc Gen. Trajanus), mercenaries (inc Tochar), rebels

SYNOPSIS:
The Aquilonian army continues to attack Sammaria, home to a rebellion against Aquilonia. Conan and some mercenaries decide to sell their swords to the Aquilonians for some quick cash. Conan is pleased to see Red Sonja is doing the same thing. She talks him into helping her steal a golden idol inside Sammaria. They sneak inside as the walls fall and the Aquilonians begins to flood the walled city. Red Sonja and Conan find the idol they’re looking for but are surprised at how big it is. Conan decides to just take a piece and discovers it’s not made of gold but terracotta. He topples it and kills the monks attacking them. Red Sonja and Conan laugh at their situation. With the city defeated the Aquilonian general learns this isn’t the heart of the rebellion, but rather Tel-a-Bhakaar. The general commits suicide in disgrace.

NOTE:
Red Sonja is wearing an outfit very similar to the one seen in RS:SH. This was published four months after that, so there you go. She was in Nemedia in RS:SH, which borders Aquilonia, so this likely happens around that. As for Conan, given RS:SH’s placement for Sonja, would be somewhere between COB 115 & COB 195. RS2 1-2 would have to happen shortly after COB 115, given Valeria’s age there and her age when she meets Conan, roughly 10 or so years later. For some reason I have it in my head that RS3 1-13 happens concurrently with COB 149-182. We have RS:SH before RS3 1, so in theory this is before COB 149. Conan is in Ophir in COB 125, Nemedia in CO@ 6 and Cimmeria in COB 127. Also, he’s in a mercenary phase at this point.

So, I’ll say this happens before CO@ 6 for Conan, and before RS:SH for Red Sonja.
