Ghost Rider 1972-1975

Post by Leoparis »

MTU 15, where Johnny and Roxanne give a show in NYC, has been placed between GR 5 & 6, both in Las Vegas.

However, GR2 6 is said to take place hours after GR2 5. And Johnny is under charges from GR 1 to 6 and I wonder how likely it is he would be allowed to leave the state.

Notes:
M/SPT 5
break
M/SPT 6 Roxanne kidnapped
M/SPT 7
M/SPT 8 1-10 Roxanne freed
break
M/SPT 8 11-20 leaves Madison Square Garden for Southwest
M/SPT 9 Roxanne poisoned
M/SPT 10 (1 - 10) Roxanne in hospital
GR2 1-FB = M/SPT 10 (8:6) delete
M/SPT 10 (11 - 20)
M/SPT 11
GR2 1 Blaze injuries, wanted by police, Roxanne in hospital & wheelchair
GR2 2 Blaze still wanted, Roxanne healthy
M/SPT 12 Roxanne kidnapped
GR2 3 Blaze in hospital, Roxanne kidnapped
GR2 4 Feb 74 1-11 Blaze injuries in Las Vegas hospital
two months pass Blaze recovers from injuries
12-19 Roxanne kidnapped
GR2 5 Roxanne freed Las Vegas
A 118
M/TU 15 Nov 73 Blaze & Roxanne at Madison Square Garden vs. the Orb
GR2 6 1-9 Charges dropped. "a couple hours ago I almost got killed keeping Jensen from frying the city" Vegas -> Frisco 10-18
GR2 7 Frisco
GR2 8 Frisco
GR2 9 Frisco, Roxanne breaks up
break
GR2 11 Hulk
M/TIO 8 Thing
MARVELS:EYE 3-FB = GR2 5 (9) delete
GR2 12 GR ran into both the Hulk (GR2 11) and the Thing (MTO 8) in the space of one week
GR2 13
GR2 35-FB
GR2 14 (1 - 16) The Orb

While bimonthly, the Ghost Rider adventures tend to have very few breaks.
M/SPT 6-8 (1-10) in New York
break?
M/SPT 8 (11-20) - GR2 4 (1-11) Southwest Roxanne then Johnny in hospital
two months
GR2 4 (12-19) - GR2 5 Las Vegas
hours
GR2 6 (1-9) charges dropped
break?
GR2 6 (10-18) - GR2 9 vs One-Man Zodiac, Johnny and Roxanne break up.

In MTU 15 Len Wein only refers to Marvel Spotlight 5, which means anything from M/SPT 6 could be shifted after MTU 15. This includes a break between pages 10 & 11 in M/SPT 8.

There is a two-month break in GR2 4 between 10 & 11 during which Johnny recovers but he's still under charges.
An undesigned break is possible in GR2 6 between pages 9 & 10 after charges have been dropped.
By publication date GR2 4 is closer.

MARVELS:EYE 3-FB has been placed after GR2 11 and MTIO 8. While the narrative refers to his recent Hulk meeting (in GR2 11), the image of GR saving Roxanne from a fire is from GR2 5 page 9 (the rule of Marvels is to use existing events) and does not need to be included. There was nobody to film the referenced Hulk encounter unlike the fire in Vegas and so the TV show used what footage was available.

In GR2 7 Stunt-Master believes that GR beat Roulette "a couple of days ago." GR2 11 says that GR's been absent from the cycling scene since his Las Vegas road show closed "a few weeks ago."

Johnny's comment that he kept Jensen from frying the city a couple of hours ago could be either extreme exaggeration or sarcasm on his part.

However, the break in M/SPT 8 seems like a better position for M/TU 15, and allows us to keep M/SPT 9 thru GR2 11 together.

All these points I brought up are minor. The bigger one is the Marvels:Eye. I tend to frown at unnecessary flashback inserts that have marred the listings in recent years. I reviewed Ghost Rider because I was looking at a later place for SMF2 9 where he's just a mention in passing and thought the analysis could be useful.

Close reading on your part. I did not pick that up. In the second part of GR2 6, Johnny decides to take up the Zodiac case. We don't know how long he was in San Francisco on the lookout for a crime. It can be a couple of days. And there is a break between GR2 10 & 11 so it can be a few weeks indeed.

Yes, it could. He's angry and angry people tend to do that.
However, the break in M/SPT 8 seems like a better position for M/TU 15, and allows us to keep M/SPT 9 thru GR2 11 together.
I thought it reads really well but that you would not go for it due to the nine months difference in publication dates.

PS: It puts all this string of issues in 1974-1975 and leaves a big vacancy for untold Ghost Rider adventures in 1973. Which is totally fine but experience with continuity inserts tells me writers rarely handle it that way. More often we have to deal with a trafic jam like the post X 66 one so I like to list all options.

Story elements have to trump publication dates. This is a situation where Ghost Rider was being written as if it happened in it's own little universe, and combined with the bi-monthly schedule, makes it difficult to keep guest appearances within a small range of publication dates. We have similar instances where we have 20 issues of Thor placed between two pages of Avengers, so it's not without precedent. The Marvel Team-Up issue was obviously written to bring Ghost Rider before a wider audience, but was released during a run of Ghost Rider issues that really shouldn't be broken up.
