Marvel Chronology Project

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy is... oddly structured. Its chronology appears to go issues 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, FCBD 2017, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Annual 1 (the Secret Empire tie-in), 12.

The Star-Lord Annual happens when Groot is already tiny, so between ANGOTG 9 and the FCBD issue somewhere.

Rocket 1-6 appear to happen shortly after the Guardians have left Earth after "Grounded."

GOTG: Dream On, GOTG: Mission Breakout, GOTG: Telltale Games 1-5 and GOTG: Mother Entropy 1-5 all have Groot full-size, so they're early on in the post-"Grounded" era. If they're canonical, anyway. At a casual glance, I can't tell why they wouldn't be, but I also have a weirdly hard time keeping the MCU and 616 versions of the Guardians straight for some reason (and I'm also not sure why GOTG: Best Story Ever is noncanonical & would like to know!).

There's an issue analysis for Guardians of the Galaxy: Best Story Ever here, which points out some of the problems. I'm not sure why the framing story can't be canon, however, even if the story told by Star-Lord is apocryphal..

PM&IF@ 1 (same month as PM&IF3 11) happens at Christmas. Spider-Woman (same month as SW6 14) has already given birth, so not the previous Christmas. Luke and Jessica are still together. Hmn. Ms. Marvel, Punisher, Doctor Strange, Deadpool (& his daughter), Medusa and Spider-Man all cameo. Doctor Strange’s cloak is red, but it’s possible it’s been mis-colored (he’s not floating).

In JJ 1-6 Dani Cage is just starting to walk and forming half words. In PM&IF@ 1, she’s talking and walking. This could just be a mistake, or it probably means PM&IF@ 1 happens after JJ 1-6.

Jessica Jones gets out of prison in JJ 1, and JJ 1-6 happens over a few days. Dani has been staying with Jessica’s mom and Luke doesn’t know that (Danny figures it out). How long has Jessica been in prison? Who knows? It is mentioned that she “left” Luke before that, and then ended up in prison at some later point (as part of the undercover operation).

In PM&IF3 13, Jessica has already left Luke, but there’s no mention of prison. She could be in prison at this point, but doesn’t have to be.

The undercover operation is to get Allison Green from CWII 4-FB. She’s still in Captain Marvel’s custody in CWII 4 (17-19) which leads directly into CWII 5-6 and the big finish. Green was most likely released somewhere in here:

DS@2 1 has Zelda coming back from "two weeks" on vacation and Strange still doesn't have his blue cloak yet. Also, the Sanctum is being repaired (it's still a wreck in DS4 11). By DS4 12 Strange already has his blue cloak, so I guess he just got it off-panel somewhere. Also, DS4 12 says it's in the same month as DS4 4-10.

Also, it's not like there's ZERO magic left in the world, people can still use it. It's just not as easy as it used to be, and it's slowly coming back.

Which just means Doctor Strange’s cloak in PM&IF3 10 is “mis-colored.” He’s only in a group shot not doing anything, so whatever.

JJ 7-12 Starts soon-ish after #6, and Maria Hill is no longer in charge of SHIELD (so after CWII:OATH, like, apparently, the day after). Jessica and Luke make up in #9, so that’s nice. Also, Luke mentions the Defenders in #9, so I guess that’s already a thing? JJ 9, DEF5 1 and DD5 21 were all published the same month.

In DEF5 1, Jessica hasn’t been living with Luke for a while, so likely between JJ 6-7. Punisher appears in #2, same month as P11 13. There’s a probable break of time in #3, where a supporting character from JJ appears so we’re likely past JJ 7-12 at this point. There’s a flashback in #4 that seems to overlap with an issue of SM2 that I haven’t read yet. #5 ends on a cliffhanger, and in #4-5 Luke and Jessica seem pretty friendly, so again, we’re likely past JJ 7-12.

Yep - this is just crazy. How is it even remotely possible that Danielle Cage is only now beginning to walk? Danielle was introduced to the world in 2006. At around the same time that Danielle was introduced, a young Amadeus Cho was also introduced into the Marvel U, stated to be 16 years old at the time. In Totally Awesome Hulk #1, it is expressly stated that he is now a 19 year old. Other characters have similarly aged over the same period of time. In the recent Black Panther #8, Luke Cage mentions that Danielle is in nursery school, and he has to prepare her for IQ tests, which i believe are usually carried out at around age 4. This fits with the shared chronology. Typical Bendis Bull$4!%.

Jessica Jones is problematic. When the story arc beginning in issue 7 begins, it is clearly set during the CWII aftermath status quo. However, by the end of issue 12, we are into a post Secret Empire scenario, with SHIELD no longer operative. Is it another Bendis Blunder, or is there a major gap somewhere in the story.? It's possible for a gap to placed in issue 10, between pages 14 & 15, where Jessica heads to Chicago. Issues 13-18 seem to follow immediately upon the end of issue 12, and are clearly after Secret Empire.

What's post-Secret Empire about JJ 12? (I haven't read JJ 13-18 yet)

Yeah, Maria Hill tells Jessica that SHIELD doesn't know where Purple Man is in JJ 12, but that doesn't mean Jessica starts looking for him next day or anything… And besides, Hill says that *SHIELD* doesn't know, implying they're still around as of JJ 12. Right?

On the second to last page of JJ 12 (page 20 of 21), Jessica asks Maria Hill if SHIELD has been Hydra the entire time. Maria then tells Jessica that without SHIELD, she's not sure who would even be looking for the Purple Man.

Looks like i may have misread an earlier "no more SHIELD" in the issue, but by the end of the issue, we really do seem to be post Secret Empire. It's possible there's a break in issue 12, rather than issue 10, between pages 8 & 9, after Jessica tells Luke she's figured out where Hill is laying low. Jessica may well seek her out for their conversation at a later date, which would lead into issues 13-18. That would make more sense to me than Jessica putting off her search for Killgrave.

Ah, yes. I see that now. Hmn.

Yeah, I'd rather put the gap in JJ 12 (as opposed to JJ 10).

SW6 13-16 happens over a handful of days; Spider-Woman and Porcupine start dating. Also, Spider-Woman and Captain Marvel make up.

To be fair, this is not limited to Bendis. Check out the Power kids. How old would you say Katie & Julie Power were, in Power Pack 1? Then look at F.F. 15. How old are they here? Now match that up to Julie in Loners 1-6, which occurs between those other two stories. How old is Julie there?

How much has Katie Power aged in the last 35 years? Compare that to, say, Kitty Pryde. She was, what, 14 at the same time?

I've always assumed that super powers screw up the aging process.

Ha - yes, indeed. Even exposure to super-powers. In fact, Aunt May seems to be getting younger. Must be a side-effect from her blood-transfusion with Spidey. Although i have a theory that Aunt May was originally drawn as young Peter saw her in his mind's eye, as in to a 15yo, everyone over 30 is really old.

A6 1-6 happens pretty quickly, and Hercules and Spider-Man join the Avengers. Also, the Avengers start HQ-ering in the Baxter Building. Also, it's after at least CHMPS2 1 (the kids have already quit).

A6 1.MU already has Hercules and Spider-Man as Avengers, and so is after A6 1-6.

A6 7-8 happens at some later point and guest stars Doctor Doom (same month as INFIM 8-9). Wasp’s G.I.R.L. group is already a thing.

UWASP 1 guest stars Ms. Marvel (same month as MSM4 14). Wasp comes up with G.I.R.L. but doesn’t have any members yet. UWASP 2-3 happens the next day, refers to MG&DDINO 13 as “recently” and Wasp starts recruiting for G.I.R.L. UWASP 4 happens on the same day through the next and guest stars Daredevil (same month as DD5 19). UWASP 5-7 happen within the next 36 hours. UWASP 8 starts the next day, lasts a day or three, then the last page is “two months later.”

It looks like UWASP 1-8 happens after A6 1.MU and before A6 7. UWASP 8 (20) might be after A6 8, maybe.

Well in May's case, part of the problem is that writers don't seem to be able to make up their minds if she's a very old person or a woman slightly over 70 who just looks older than she is because she's been battling a heart condition most of her life.

CHMPS2 1 (8:3)-FB happens shortly after CWII ends (Nova and Spider-Miles quit the Avengers because of CWII). CHMPS2 1 (2:4-5)-FB happens “five days ago” (Ms. Marvel quits the Avengers because of property damage). Ms. Marvel calls Nova and Spider-Miles and they form a team. The next day they recruit Teen-Hulk then Viv Vision and name themselves the Champions. Riri Williams is seen building a new Iron Man armor but I’m not sure if that means it’s before IIM3 1 or after. Moon Girl is already running around with Devil Dinosaur.

A comment is made in CHMPS2 2 that the kids have only been a team “for about a day,” but that’s probably a sarcastic exaggeration. Nu-Cyclops joins the team, and for some reason this feels like its after IvX. I could be totally wrong about that, though. CHMPS2 2-4 happen in a day, and people in Sharzad have heard of the Champions (so there, I guess they have been a team for more than “about a day”). In CHMPS2 4 Ms. Marvel mentions that mutants and Inhumans are supposed to hate each other, so maybe this is before IvX.

CHMPS2 1.MU has nu-Cyclops on the team, so after CHMPS2 4 at least. The letters page in CHMPS2 6 confirms this issue happens at some point before #6.

CHMPS2 5 guest stars Gwenpool (same month as UGP 11-12, a reference to Spider-Miles places it at least after UGP 6). Also, it’s relatively recent after a local election, so we’re likely in mid-to-late November by this point if not December. There is a gap between CHMPS2 4-5 (despite the fourth-wall breaking Gwenpool at the end of #4, but hey, put the break in before she shows up).

CHMPS2 6-7 starts at some later point after #5, and a tweet in #7 says it’s after the New Year (shortly?). Happens over a day or two.

CHMPS2 8 happens over two days and Champions merchandise is already available. In theory that would mean we’re months after #7, but not necessarily. CHMPS2 7 revealed the Freelancers registered the Champions trademark, but they didn’t say when they did it; it could have been shortly after CHMPS2 1.MU. If so, that just means we’re months after CHMPS2 1.MU. Viv is grounded at the end of the issue. Also, not that he appears, but we’re at a point where Richard Rider is back, so we’re after NO7 1-7.

CHMPS2 9 happens at some later point over a day. Nothing came of that grounding I guess, but that just means it’s not the day after #8. Also, we’re well before “July” given a comment by a taxi driver.

NO7 1-3 happens in a day during the school year after the Champions have formed. Nova has been off-world for “four days” so no appearances for him elsewhere during that time. Also, Nova’s been later for school three times “this month,” so school’s been in session for at least that long (so this could be anywhere from September thru December). Ms. Marvel (same as MSM4 14) and Spider-Miles (SM2 12) cameo in #2. Also, DEATH’S HEAD appears!!1~!!

NO7 4-6 & 7 (1-16) happen some time later, not immediately after #3 but not too long after either (maybe a week or two?). Happens in a night and Rich gets all fixed up. Gamora appears (on Earth, so likely before GOTG4 19, and therefore 17). NO7 7 (17-20) happens “a week” later. Before CHMPS2 8.

You know what? I really liked Nova v7.

In MSM4 12 Ms. Marvel plans to spend a month in Pakistan to defrag from CWII but cuts it short (she’s there for maybe two weeks?). Probably before she quits the Avengers.

MSM4 12/2 happens while Maria Hill is still with SHIELD. Black Widow appears.

MSM4 13 happens on November 7-9.

MSM4 14 says “in the space of a few weeks” Ms. Marvel has lost Bruno (who went to Wakanda on a scholarship in MSM4 12) and her mentors (she quit the Avengers in CHMPS2 1-FB). In theory, that means she spent a week or two in Pakistan, then quit the Avengers pretty quickly afterward (over “a few weeks”), and this is after all of those things. MSM4 15 starts the morning after #14 and heads into the next day. MSM4 16 starts the same day as the end of #15 and heads into the next day. MSM4 17 starts the same day and goes into the next, which refers to MSM4 14 as “several days ago.”
