Chronology: Birth of the Fantastic Four to Birth of the Avengers

I've had a detailed look at ASM3 #1.2 and 1.3.

Some of ASM3 #1.2 belongs with ASM #1/2 not just before ASM #2/1.

I break 1.2 down as:-
(1-3) Clash on patrol sees Vulture.
ASM #1/2(1-5:1) SM tries to join FF.
(4-9) Clash sees SM leave FF. Counsellor blames Flash for PP's bruises, and introduces PP to the nerd club. Clash wants Maxie Schiffer to hire SM.
(10-12) ~ ASM #1/2(5.2-10) vs Chameleon.
(13-19) MS arranges staged fight between Clash and SM. SM wins too easily.
(20) Aunt May enters PP's bedroom and suspects him of something bad.

The end of 1.2 continues in 1.3.

I break 1.3 down as:-
(1-2) Clash can't salvage the video of the fight.
(3-4) AM accuses PP having making money from drugs. But he says the money was an anonymous donation from a neighbour, and he's working on stuff for a science fair.
(5-6) Clayton Cole and the nerd club set up for the Science Fair.
(7:1) PP is still trying to work on an entry in science class, but then ...
(7:2) ~ ASM #2/1(2:6) ... he overhears his classmates talking about the Vulture.
(7:3) ~ ASM #2/1(3:3)) AM gives PP Uncle Ben's miniature camera.
(7:4-10) ~ ASM #2/1(rest) SM vs Vulture. PP sells photos to JJJ.
(11-21) The Science Fair. Clash submits himself as an entry. SM tries to control him but the fight gets out of control. AM thinks SM is a menace.

So I divide the 2 issues into 3 sections:-

ASM3 #1.2(1-3) Clash on patrol sees Vulture.

I've been looking at Iron Man: Iron Age #1 as it pertains to this area of chronology.

Firstly there are 2 large chunks we don't have to consider.

p4-11:2 is a flashbacks sequence set before TOS#39. MCP has it all before TS's cameo in Marvel Saga #4(4:4), which is part of a bunch of stuff supposed to be before the FF's origin. So we can assume this all happens before your list begins.

p22:3 onwards is Avengers #1 and beyond, so, can also be left out of this section.

You have 2 entries for the issue in this range:-

But (1-2) is actually a direct replay of a scene in TOS#41(4:3-4:5). Which is why MCP don't bother to mention it but list (3) immediately afterwards:-

In IM 244 (22:5 - 24:5)-FB-FB TS returns to the US and gives his fiancée Joanna Nivena the brush-off because he doesn't want her to discover his chestplate, and also a Stan Lee-type angsty bit about not wanting to burden her with an invalid husband.
In IM:IA 1 (14:1)-FB Pepper notes that TS is withdrawn.
In IM 244 (25;1 - 25:4)-FB-FB TS tells Joanna his secret. She is supportive through some previously-unrecorded grey-armour adventures, but eventually regretfully calls the engagement off.
The missing IM:IA 1 (14:2)-FB has Joanna leaving in tears after telling TS. MCP may consider it a version of the last panel of IM 244 (25;1 - 25:4)-FB-FB.
IM:IA 1 (14:3 - 14:4)-FB has TS not being able to enjoy parties, and starting to drink heavily.

I've missed out AOI:RIM (16)-FB because it's just a replay of the brush-off in IM 244 (22:5 - 24:5)-FB-FB (and as such MCP have it in the wrong place).

(9-11) in the too-early flashbacks showed TS spending his time as playboy and inventor, and leaving Pepper to actually run his company.
(21:-21:3) continues that theme showing him diving back into his jet-setting life after the Saboteur bit, including a replay of TOS#44(1) where he flies to an archaeological dig in Egypt.
(21:4-21:6) has Pepper watching this and a headline reports IM solving the wind-tunnel problem in TOS#43(2-4:4).
(22:1-22:2) replays TOS#41(4:6) where IM stops ships colliding, and TOS#41(12:5-12:6) where IM smashes Carlo Strange's generators.
This series of events mentioned is out of sequence. It seems to me that (21) is current leading up to TOS#44, and the headline and following replays are flashbacks.

Thus I suggest:-

While researching Iron Man: Iron Age #1 I discovered a problem with with Amazing Spider-Man III #1.4. You have it in 2 places:-

Unfortunately Thing and Thor are also in the issue and they're not happy with either place.


The root cause of the problem is that pre-Avengers #1 Marvel's headline stars didn't interact very much, so this has enabled you to arrange the individual timelines fairly freely. But I believe MCP base the combined timeline of this era on the sequence defined in Marvel Saga, and they've used that as a guide when inserting retcons like ASM3#1.1-1.5.

Marvel Saga #9 has:-
.... JIM#93, ASM#2/2, ST#109, TOS#42, TTA#44, FF#15, ASM#3.
MS#10 follows with:-
ST#110, TTA#45, TOS#43, JIM#94 ....

MCP has ASM3#1.4-1.5 between ASM#2/2 and #3 for SM, ST#109 and #110 for Thing, JIM#93 and #94 for Thor, and TOS#42 and #43 for IM.

In Marvel Saga terms putting ASM3#1.4-1.5 between TOS#42 and ASM#3 satisfies all the requirements.

With all due respect there's no reason why MCP should amend their individual chronologies to fit your sequence, replacing Marvel Saga's guideline with yours. But a closer look at things shows that the situation isn't as dire as it seems at 1st sight.

Most of the relevant issues are clustered bin the middle of the list, and the main outliers are the 2 versions of ASM3#1.4. There's no reason why the top ASM3 1.4, 1.5 has to immediately follow ASM#2/2. As far as Spidey is concerned it could be placed immediately before ASM#3. Similarly from IM's POV Amazing Spider-Man III 1.4 (and Iron Man: The Iron Age #1(15-20)) can be moved up to just below TOS #42 (and Fury #1(25)). Suddenly everything is within striking distance of each other:-

Apart from bringing Thing and Thor into line with their MCP chronologies, none of this affects the chronologies of any other chars (eg Jane Foster is with Thor in ASM3#1.4).

Of course this may affect the reasons why you had things (no pun intended) in their original positions. But you are obviously free to rearrange the sequences above and below ASM3#1.4. And some splits in ST#109 and ASM#3 may no longer be necessary unless you want to separate them because of time-gaps.

Note that MCP don't always follow Marvel Saga religiously anyway. For instance they have the FF in ST#110/1 before FF#15 whereas MS has them the other way round.

A late add-on:-
It just occurred to me that ST#109 might still be splittable around ASM3#1.4 without affecting his chronology if Thing only appears in the 1st half of it. But no such luck, he's in the last panel as well.

I think i've mentioned it already, but just for the record, that's never been my intention. Wherever possible i would like to see these chronologies brought in line with the MCP's individual character chronologies. Just when you thought it was safe, here comes the opening two-page scene of ASM3 1.4, in which Spider-Man is taking photos of the following things:

* The Thing arguing with a parking lot attendant, from Fantastic Four #14 (11:4), and stacking cars (12:2)
* Thor flying with Jane Foster, apparently from Journey Into Mystery #89 (11:1-11:2) --although Peter thinks "what's up with Thor flying these nurses around all the time?," which implies that it might not have to be that particular moment

I don't think any of that is too much of a problem. Apart from his flashback appearance in ASMF 6 (2:2 - 3)-FB, which i've still neglected to inlude, Spidey doesn't appear in anything between ASM 2/2 and ASM3 1.4, and all of the other scenes have already occured in our chronology, as robfj has worked out in this section, so each of these scenes could simply be considered as flashbacks. It would be different if we had some of those scenes placed after ASM3 1.4, but i think it works as it stands.

What is the entry near the end for Ms Marvel II 9 (1-4)-FB?
There is no FB in p1-4 of Ms Marvel (Carol Danvers) vol 2 (2006) #9.

I've tried a few variations on what you might mean but no luck.

Of course, it's pure speculation on placement, but seems about right unless i've badly miscalculated. Fixed above.

Going back to Marvel 75th Anniversary Celebration, though, Kamala's already around (and being called inside by her mother) at the time of the FF's space flight, so that flashback would have to predate FF 1 considerably...
