"X-Men: First Class" question

Post by Fraxon » Tue Nov 09, 2010 3:28 pm

Is this series canon, or does it fall outside of continuity?

This is tricky. First Marvel seemed to think First Class was canon, but then the Indexes and the Handbooks stopped referring to the First Class books. At least one First Class story has been referenced in a canon book. Some of the First Class books fit into continuity perfectly, some of them have minor errors (like Kitty referring to Scott's lover as Jean at a time when Scott's lover was Maddie), and some of them have major continuity problems (like the Black Widow working for SHIELD pre-Avengers 38).

Well, after the reading of Captain America Theater Of War: America First I think that maybe it was possibile for Natasha working at the same time for the SHIELD (or, at least, for the CIA) and the KGB.

But Avengers 38 reads like it's the first meeting between Nick and Natasha- it certainly doesn't read like they just worked together a few months ago.

I think were going to be debating this for a long time. There are several series that have and are going to be brushing the line between canon and not. Currently we have:

X-Men: First Class v1 and v2, Special, and a Giant-Size which take place between UX 1 and UX 39 in no particular order.
X-Men: First Class: Finals which takes place between X:HY 22 and GSX 1
Uncanny X-Men: First Class and a Giant-Size which takes place between UX 109 and UX 111.
Wolverine: First Class which takes place between UX 139 and UX 154.
Weapon X: First Class which takes place in UX 149ish. with back-ups of Deadpool, Sabretooth, and Gambit at various points.

Pet Avengers various series.

Iron Man: Legacy which story arcs take place at different time periods in Iron Man's timeline.

Spider-Man & the Secret Wars, Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet, and the soon to be released Captain America & the Korvac Saga.

All of these series skirt the line, is it possible to keep this in one thred and debate each books continuity errors and whether or not they are reconcilable or just to far off to be considered.

Some of these series already have threads:
The current arc in Iron Man: Legacy is discussed here:

Spider Man and the Secret Wars is discussed here:

This interview makes it clear Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet is not intended to be canon:
