MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #25 (Nov 1941)

Text Story:
By Stan Lee

APPEARANCES:
Toro, Human Torch, Terry Vance, Angel, Patriot, Ka-Zar, Vision, Namor

SYNOPSIS:
Toro, the Human Torch, Terry Vance, Angel, Patriot, Ka-Zar, Vision, and Namor meet and vow to “preserve the sacred principles and ideals of American democracy and to crush the fiendish efforts of the underworld for all time!” The Torch and Namor start arguing again, but the rest separate them before they can come to blows and decide to see who can catch the most criminals before they all meet up again next month.

NOTE:
This story stretches my suspension of disbelief. I could maybe buy the others meeting for this purpose, but Ka-Zar traveling all the way from Africa for such a silly meeting? However, even though it’s silly, I don’t see why it couldn’t have happened.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #26 (Dec 1941)

Text Story:
By Irving Werstein

APPEARANCES:
Bill Carter, Northside High School students, Tom Fredericks, Ned Harris, Don Henry, Bill’s father and mother, Northside High School football team

SYNOPSIS:
Bill Carter is a star football player for Northside High School. With the big game coming up next week he has to pass his history exam or he won’t be allowed to play. He hasn’t studied hard enough to pass, though, so he cheats. He feels awful the entire next week, though. His conscience almost compels him to turn himself in, but he reasons that the other players are counting on him and he doesn’t want to cause them to lose the big game. On the day of the game, Coach Harris gives a speech in the locker room about the importance of playing fair, as how you play is more important than whether you win. Bill is convicted and blurts out that he shouldn’t play, since he cheated on his test. The rest of the team is shocked, but the coach brings in Tom Fredericks, Bill’s history teacher. Tom knew that Bill cheated and bet that he would confess, since he’s a good kid. Tom and the coach explain that Bill can play, since he confessed, and he’ll be allowed to retake the test, although the retake will be harder. Bill is thrilled and promises that he’ll work extra hard to pass the retake.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #27 (Jan 1942)

Text Story:
By ?

APPEARANCES:
Old Tom Moriarty, Eddie Thompson, bank customers, bank robbers, bank teller, Henry Gordon, state troopers

SYNOPSIS:
Old Tom Moriarty lives on his own way out in the boonies. His only visitor is the mailman, Eddie Thompson, who comes by once a day. In the nearby town of Kenton, a bank robbery is halted by the bank’s guard and some state troopers. The bank robbers escape, but roadblocks put up by the state patrol force the robbers off-road. That night they come to Old Tom Moriarty’s house and capture him, wanting to hide out there until the heat dies down. The next day Eddie comes by to visit and Tom takes a newspaper. Eddie leaves and the robbers think they’re doing fine until state troopers arrive that night and arrest them. Eddie knew to alert the state patrol because he knew that Tom is illiterate and never gets a newspaper.

NOTE:
Old Tom was one of the Rough Riders and was present at the Battle of San Juan Hill. Cool! :D

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #28 (Feb 1942)

Text Story:
By Mickey Spillane

APPEARANCES:
Jack, Slim, German sailors, Allied destroyer crew

SYNOPSIS:
Jack and Slim are sailing when they’re caught in a storm. When the storm passes they see that their small ship is trapped in the Sargasso Sea along with the hulks of other ships that have been trapped over the years. Trying to see if they can find enough wood among the ships to build a raft, they come across a German ship hiding among the hulks, radioing info about Allied convoys back to their superiors. Jack and Slim are captured, but they manage to escape and radio a nearby Allied destroyer. The allies arrive and capture the Germans, thanking Slim and Jack.

NOTE:
I think this is the first time I’ve ever read a Mickey Spillane story! :)
