Call for analysis: CONAN!

Post by Col_Fury »

This is a call for analysis for books that take place (mostly) in the Hyborian Age, or rather, the time of Conan. By mostly, I mean there’s some King Kull stuff in here as well, and that’s in the Age of Atlantis.

Don’t forget, Roy Thomas put together a set of chronologies we can work off of.

What we want in an analysis is which characters appear, what happens in the stories, what kind of placement clues there are, etc. The synopses don’t have to be terribly long or detailed but you can be as long-winded as you wish. Feel free to point out any bits you like, say if a story is an adaptation or whatever. Here’s an example of what we’re looking for.

Don't worry about formatting or anything like that. There's no real "right way" to present an analysis, just try to be clear and we'll all figure it out. We can always ask for clarification if we can't suss out what you're saying, right?

We're hoping to get the information out there so we can hammer everything together. Also, please don't rely on online resources; go to the comics. We can always check our findings against other websites, but we shouldn't get our information from them.

If you've been thinking about starting to analyze comics for the MCP, or thinking about getting back into it, now's the time! :)

Also, we’re going to wait until everything’s been analyzed before any of this is put into the chronologies to make sure we have everything covered. Keep in mind, a handful of these are already partially in the MCP. If something needs to be adjusted that’s already in, point that out!

Please look over the list and let us know if there’s anything you can help out on by submitting an analysis.

This list will be updated to reflect (volunteers). Once an analysis is submitted, the book will be crossed off this list.

I haven't contributed much lately, so i'll take M/FEA2 – MARVEL FEATURE v2 (1975-1976) #1-7 & COB – CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1971-1993) #66-68, which crosses over with these issues, as i have them all on hand. :)
Out in the Land Down-Under, beneath a rocky outcrop, deep within the back paddock, dwells the Stray Lamb.

Okay, I have Marvel Super-Special #9/2, Red Sonja v2 and Savage Sword of Conan #225/2 just about ready to post, but want to give it another read-over with fresher eyes before I actually post it.

[It was one of these things. I was just going to do the two-issue RS2, then the first page made it immediately obvious that issue 1 was not part 1 of the story, so I had to go looking for where the start was, and then the ending caused me to look something else up, and it turned out there was a story with flashbacks that interweaved with RS2 and... for crying out loud, RS2 isn't even a good story!]

I see that KULLC 1-3 is already in the MCP, so I'll take those off the list. MOTP 16 & COTL 10 are also already in the MCP (they're not on the list, but I figured I'd mention it). BIZADV 26 & M/PRV 19 are not, though, so I'll add them to the list.

Don't forget to add to the list of issues to analyze the following original foreign Marvel Conan stories:

From Turkey:
Conan İlkel Çağlarin Yenilmez Savaşçisi #57 (1983)
Conan İlkel Çağlarin Yenilmez Savaşçisi #198 (1994, Alfa Yayinlari)
Conan İlkel Çağlarin Yenilmez Savaşçisi #199 (1994, Alfa Yayinlari)

From Italy:
Conan il conquistatore #1 (May 1997)
Conan il conquistatore #2 (Nov 1997)

I know of possible original original Conan comic stories published in Spain, Bulgaria, Poland, and Indonesia, but I'm not aware of any connection to Marvel for those issues.

I added them over here, but I won't include them in this call for analysis. I don't know anyone who has access to these comics; it might take eight years to finish up this call if we added them in.

Of course, if someone were to track down these comics they could provide an analysis at any time, regardless if there's a call out for them.

Thanks!

These two seem to be reprints from the first two issues of La Espada Salvaje de Conan vol.3 published by FORUM in Spain.
Vol.1 reprinted Savage Sword Of Conan and vol.2 reprinted Conan The Savage. The third volume featured all new stories and lasted 14 issues + 1 annual. The indicia from those magazines say that it reprints material from Conan the Conqueror, but that series doesn't exist. I know some of these new stories were also published in France. Chuck Dixon even wrote some of the stories!

This is a quick translation (using Google) from an editorial in the first issue :
''A EUROPEAN CONAN. What to do when Marvel USA cleans the tap, making Conan disappear in the practice of his editorial program? In other circumstances the Cimmerian would have disappeared together with its editions, but in January 1996, the Panini publishing house, of Modena (Italy), which is part of the Marvel Empire and then begins to deal with the sale of the rights, enters into action. Numbers are made, the project is studied, the foreign publishers are talked about, who with greater force edit Conan internationally. Then, in the summer of 1996, I started work. The choice of Editor of the new series rests with Francesco Meo, through which the first proposals of writers and draughtsmen begin to arrive. Pino Rinaldi accepts to take charge of the episode of opening of the series, a traveling for the life of Conan. In the texts, a young Catalan guide: Xavier Marturet. What will be the "European Conan", apart from its cast of authors? First of all, it will be the first case of an American adventure comic that will continue its career thanks to a European creative team, a new project, a truly unique initiative in its And, for once … we bet it will be us, the Europeans who influence in the Americans? And who knows what other surprises keeps the future? Marco M. Lupoi / Director of Marvel International . ''

I'm Italian, and I remember when the two volumes "Conan Il Conquistatore" came out. These were two deluxe books, hardcover, each with a 55-page story. The first volume contained the story "La Forza Del Destino" (the strength of destiny) by Xavier Marturet and Pino Rinaldi, the second "Le Spade Degli Amanti" (the swords of lovers) by Ade Capone and Andrea Bianchi Carnevale. The Italian publication was interrupted after these two stories, I do not remember if in Spain it continued or if old stories were reissued.
Here two link to an excellent italian database of Marvel Comics:
