Marvel Comics #1001

Post by Somebody »

Not a full analysis, just some notes for discussion:
  • /1 "Space and Time" - The new Masked Raider shoots some people, presumably after his appearance in M/C 1000. (Framing sequence)
  • /2 "Leopards and Spots" - The classic New Warriors (Justice/Firestar, Nova/Namorita, Night Thrasher/Silhouette and Speedball/Rage) tackle a bunch of emergencies. Most of them are in their original suits, including Nova who hasn't worn his since Annihilation (Silhouette is in her second, blue/black/silver suit), but Justice appears to be in his George Perez Avengers suit.
  • /3 "This Means War" - Kamala Khan & Miles Morales get caught up in a prank war on each other. Normal costumes, they're not apparently on the Champions' airship from Jim Zub's run.
  • /4 "My name is Monark Starstalker" - Fourth-wall breaking thing where Monark says how shocked Howard Chaykin was that he had cameoed in the BH6 movie.
  • /5 "Neither Here Nor There" - While trying to stop a Sentinel from exploding, Nightcrawler is bugged by a reporter trying to ask him about what teleporting's like. He's in his original/classic costume.
  • /6 "Tigra in Greer's New Career" - Tigra thinks about setting up as "Truly Nelson, Vermin Terminator", decides it's a bad idea. She references her kid.
  • /7 "The Devil and the Darkness" - Daredevil waxes philosophical as he's...doing something on a wall high in the air. Classic DD suit, can go anywhere he's active wearing it.
  • /8 "Spider-Man: The Final Battle" - Old Man Peter fights through a crowd of villains to meet Uncle Ben, apparently at the moment of death.
  • /9 "Rain Check" - Storm storms out on the X-Men. Who are apparently based in a leaking, boarded up building. They're mostly in late-80s looks (short-haired Storm, brown/tan Wolverine, blue-shorts Jubilee, red X-Factor suit (!) Jean, original Gambit), but Professor X is in his hoverchair. Not sure this is canon.
  • /10 "The Insult That Made a Pig out of Ziggy" - Spoof Ziggy Pig/Silly Seal ad, with Fat Thor, for the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos.
  • /11 "Kid Colt, Outlaw, in Moving On" - Kid Colt is talked into settling down under a false name by Abigail & her father. "Many Years Later", he still lives there with Abigail and their kid.
  • /12 "Spa Day" - In the X-Mansion, Furry Beast is interrupted in listening to ASMR videos by Teen Jean. Beast has his post-Bendis look, Teen Jean has her hair bobbed (so c. X-Men Blue).
  • /13 "Turf War" - Spider bites Peter.
  • /14 "Deadpool in Happy Deadpool-Versary" - Fourth-wall break, Deadpool shoots Thanos in the head and takes the Infinity Gauntlet.
  • /15 "Sleepwalker in Selfie-Aware" - Sleepwalker gets in the way of someone taking a picture of a "really cute cat."
  • /16 "Comic Zone" - Marci Matsumoto interviews a fourth-wall breaking Blonde Phantom, who still looks 25 in the present day because she's aware that she's in a comic. (She is not aware Namora is still around, however.)
  • /17 "The Rest of Your Life" - Kitty Pryde, c. X-Men Gold, talks to a kid in hospital who accidentally destroyed a town when his powers emerged, suggesting he becomes an X-Man.
  • /18 "Hulk Cookies" - Green/Red/Blue Hulk Audrey Loeb post-Mini Marvels strip.
  • /19 "Destroy All Robots" - Death's Head nearly kills Machine Teen under a contract from the Phalanx, until Viv Vision (joined by Nextwave Machine Man, Classic Jocasta and another robot I'm not quite sure of) shows him they plan to kill him too when he's done. He is appropriately unhappy at this, yes?
  • /20 "Captain America in Comics for Victory" - Fake PSA, with WW2 Cap & Bucky telling everyone to donate their comics, once read, to a paper drive.
  • /21 "Existential Crisis in a Nutshell" - Squirrel Girl's unhappy she's not a mutant any more.
  • /22 "616's Best Stress Testers" - Jubilee, Dazzler, Gambit and Boom Boom blast diamond-form Emma Frost. She thanks them for their assistance after she comes through unscathed. Jubilee's got her powers and is wearing black+raincoat, Dazzler's short-haired with blue costume & jacket, Gambit's in his original costume, Boom Boom's in civvies and Frost is in her Cassiday suit.
  • /23 "Uatu Know" - Uatu gets pranked by the classic Inhuman Royal Family while they're neighbours on the Moon.
  • /24 "Us: Kickers, Inc.!" - Kicker's, Inc. try to pitch a bunch of Marvel movies starring them, with increasingly-bad plots. It doesn't go well. (There's a bunch of other obscure cameos in the last panel I don't recognise).
  • /25 "What's In A Name?" - The Renew Your Vows Spider-family try to pick a new name for the kid.
  • /26 "Machine Man in See What's Become of Me" - A classic-style Machine Man has cosmic awareness and dodges a question about the Nextwave-style Machine Man fighting Marvel Zombies...
  • /27 "Powers of Pack" - Power Pack are interviewed separately - Alex & Julie with the Future Foundation, Katie on a rooftop, and Jack in his YouTube studio showing off his merchandise!
  • /28 "Consequences" - Wolverine & Jubilee deal with a mutant-hating knucklehead. Classic-style Jubilee, Wolverine in civvies (albeit with an "X" T-shirt). Probably during the Larry Hama/Marc Silvestri run where Jubilee's his sidekick (Hama writes this).
  • /29 "The Amazing Spider-Man's Sunday Visit" - Spidey visits (presumably Uncle Ben's) grave, MJ comes to fetch him, since Aunt May's made pot roast.
  • /30 "Time and Space" - Masked Raider, closing side of the framing sequence.

General ideas:
  • So /1 & 30 (Masked Raider), /3 (Champions), /6 (Tigra), /15 (Sleepwalker), /16 (Blonde Phantom), /21 (Squirrel Girl), /24 (Kickers), /27 (Power Pack) and /29 (Spider-Man pot roast) are probably present-day or near enough. /5 (Nightcrawler) and /22 (Stress Testing) may also be.
  • /12 (Blue Beast/Teen Jean) and /17 (Kitty Pryde) are set some time during the X-Men Blue & Gold runs. (The latter is written by the X:G writer).
  • /7 can't be during the current run of Daredevil, but can be anywhere he's healthy and active as Daredevil in the classic red suit.
  • /28 (Wolverine/Jubilee) could technically be present-day, but I'm more inclined to think some time during the Hama/Silvestri run where the two were hanging out all the time, especially with the writer.
  • /11 (Kid Colt), /13 (Spider-Man origin repeat) and /23 (Uatu/Inhumans) are also explicitly set in the past for obvious reasons. /13 may be "no new info", I don't know enough to suggest places for the other two.
  • /18 (Mini-Marvels) and /25 (Renew Your Vows) are explicitly pre-existing alternate universes and so not relevant to MU placement, but need placed for their own universes (/18 at the end of Mini-Marvels).

And the problem children:
  • /2 (New Warriors)... the costumes don't seem to line up to place anywhere in particular. Any ideas (beyond the obvious "art error")?
  • /4 (Monark), /10 (Ziggy/Silly/Thanos) and /14 (Deadpool) are fourth-wall breaks that are probably imaginary stories - i.e., they're probably basically dream sequences if they count at all.
  • /8 (Spider-dead) probably doesn't relate to anything else?
  • /9 (X-Men)... umm... any places where that combination of characters/costumes/etc could possibly go? None leap to mind.
  • /19 (Death's Head)... does this relate to anything else? He's a universe-jumper, it could be the real Death's Head but alternates of the rest.
  • /20 (Cap PSA) is a silly parody. Depends what you want to make of it, it could be in or not (if it's in, probably as some sort of advert Cap appeared in?)
  • /26 (Machine Man) is straight-up "wut"? Is Stern trying to suggest the Nextwave Machine Man is a fake?
