SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #217 (January 1994)
By Roy Thomas & Esteban Maroto

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Baron Sabaninus (“Lord Sergianus”), Nateela, a Khitan wizard & his demon, Lady Khashtris, her bodyguard (Shubal) & her bearers (inc 2 Ophirean brothers), Queen Ialamis & her advisors (inc Lord Arkhaurus), Acrallidus (Khauran’s governor), Princess Taramis, Shadizar residents, Khauran residents, mirror demon

SYNOPSIS:
A wizard makes the elderly Baron Sabaninus young again by sacrificing a servant girl to a demon. Posing as his nephew “Lord Sergianus,” Sabaninus leaves Korveka in search of a queen. In Shadizar the Wicked, Conan stops some rogues from stealing from a rich woman, Lady Khashtris, who hires him as another bodyguard. Conan buys new armor, hires two brothers to bear the lady’s chariot and double checks his mirror and Eye of Erlik before they set off. Conan learns the lady is related to a queen, necessary for him to regain his soul. As they camp one night the bearers she hired killed the bearers Conan hired and prepared to rob her; Conan saves her again and they celebrate with some sexy fun time. When they arrive in Khauran Khashtris takes Conan to the royal palace and introduces Conan to her cousin Queen Ialamis, who is courting Sergianus. The queen smashes the mirror and Conan regains his soul, but the glass shards begin circling the room and form into a giant mirror demon. Conan and Shubal fight the beast, eventually defeating it. Conan notices something is wrong with Sergianus’ reflection.

NOTE:
Adapted from “Conan the Mercenary” by Andrew J. Offut.

Queen Ialamis is the daughter of Lady Khashtris’ mother’s sister.

The second story is the sixth and last part of an adaptation, and so can be covered later.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #218 (February 1994)
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his Kozaki/Free Companions (inc Turghol, Roxelana, Sablat, Vanov, Ilyan, Ogadai, Milo, Zorka), Isparana, Zula, Prince Yezdigerd & his army, Cmdr. Grimm (a Cimmerian, “black hound of death”)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan deals with a mutiny within the Free Companions by killing Milo; he takes the injured Zorka back to camp for questioning. Isparana has feinted and needs rest, and Roxelana shows Conan a good time. That night Zorka escapes and Conan orders him followed. Isparana secretly leaves the camp, fearing what her unborn baby will become. Zorka goes to a Turanian camp and tells Yezdigerd where Conan is. The prince puts Cmdr. Grimm in charge, who kills Zorka. Conan tells the various Kozaki chiefs they must band together to drive off the Turanians, like the Cimmerians did against the Aquilonians. Conan is challenged to the wheel of swords, where he has to fight someone from each tribe at once. Conan defeats them and they accept his plan. Zula returns and Conan learns that Cmdr. Grimm has been put in charge; Conan knows him.

NOTE:
Picking up where COB 275 left off.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Esteban Maroto

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also as “Crispis”), Baron Sabaninus (“Lord Sergianus,” also in fb), Queen Ialamis (also in fb) & her advisors (inc Lord Arkhaurus (also in fb) & his wife), Princess Taramis, Lady Khashtris & her bodyguard (Shubal), Acradillus & his wife, Khauran residents (inc Mishi, Nebinio), assassins, giant toad-like demon, Sfalana (Shubal’s lady, mentioned only), Krallides (Acradillus’ son, mentioned only)

FLASHBACK:
“Lord Sergianus” arrives in Khauran, claiming to have been robbed. Meanwhile, Queen Ialamis suffers from nightmares after having to kill one of her daughters and then being widowed a year later.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan chats with Shubal about Sergianus/Sabaninus, but they’re overheard by one of the queen’s advisors. Arkhaurus says he’ll talk to the queen about Sergianus if they can prove he’s lying. Meanwhile, Sergianus flirts with Ialamis. Shubal sets up a meeting for Conan with a Nemedian to prove what they say about Sergianus, but Shubal is attacked by assassins and Nebinio (the Nemedian) is killed. Conan gets a barmaid (Mishi) a job working for Princess Taramis. When the queen takes a vacation with Sergianus, Mishi drugs Conan. Shubal saves Conan and they agree Mishi planned to kill Taramis and blame Conan. Conan chases after her, but finds her dying from stabs wounds. She tells Conan that Arkhaurus planned the whole thing. They tell Lady Khashtris about the plot but the queen doesn’t believe it. Conan plots to have Arkhaurus reveal himself. Later at a state dinner, Conan poses as “Crispis,” an illusionist and draws Arkhaurus and Sabaninus out. Both are killed, and the Baron is revealed as very, very old when the spell wears off. A giant toad-like demon appears, eats the old man’s corpse and vanishes. Filled with grief, Ialamis kills herself. Taramis is made queen. Conan bids his friends farewell.

NOTE:
Adapted from “Conan the Mercenary” by Andrew J. Offut.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #219 (March 1994)
By Roy Thomas & Colin MacNeil

This one’s already in the MCP. Conan meets Solomon Kane, but it’s in the wrong spot for Conan. According to this, it’s one month after COB 100.

NOTE:
Followed by “Kane the Avenger,” a Solomon Kane chronology by Fred Blosser.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb) & his Kozaki/Free Companions (inc Turghol, Sablat), Zula, Cmdr. Grimm (“the hound,” in fb, also in fb-fb), Glorana (in fb), Hakar (in fb), Svenno (in fb, also in fb-fb), Tibior (in fb), Black Monks (in fb-fb), Picts (in fb, inc Ju-Ho)

FLASHBACK:
In Cimmeria, young Conan is on a quest to warn his tribe about approaching Picts. He stumbles across a dying man who’s been ripped apart. He meets the dead man’s companions and helps them find the cabin they’re looking for. Conan warns them of the Picts (fb). Svenno and Grimm lead a group into Aesgaard and arrive at Yahlgan. They’re ambushed by the Black Monks who kill everyone but Grimm and Svenno. Svenno knocks Grimm out and flees, hoping getting Grimm will be enough for the Monks (fb-fb). Svenno doesn’t trust Conan so he leaves, but keeps an eye on the cabin. He’s knocked out by some Picts. When Conan wakes he learns the Picts are working for Grimm, escapes and kills the Picts. Returning to the cabin he finds Hakar dead and Grimm preparing to torture and kill Glorana. Conan attacks, impaling Grimm on a spear. Conan rescues Glorana, but the cabin is on fire and Grimm rips out Svenno’s throat. Conan and Glorana leave thinking Grimm to be dead.
SYNOPSIS:
Having just learned Cmdr. Grimm is leading the Turanian forces, Conan thinks back to how he knows him.

NOTE:
Adapted from “The Black Hound of Death” by REH.

The flashback is after SAVSCO 6/2, at least (that battle is referenced). Also, before he leaves Cimmeria.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #220 (April 1994)
By Roy Thomas & Colin MacNeil

Again, wrong spot for Conan. Also, King Yabalya should be -OP here, instead of -BTS.

Followed by a publishing history of Solomon Kane by Glen Lord.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his Kozaki/Free Companions (inc Sablat, Bazil), Zula, Kezankian Hillmen (inc Xeres, Hobar (from COB 31), Taqui (Hobar’s daughter), Muzon (Hobar’s son)), Atalis (from COB 30), Prince Thann (also from COB 30), Fafnir Demonhand

FLASHBACK:
Recap of COB 30.
SYNOPSIS:
The Free Companions fight Kezankian Hillmen until Conan and Hobar recognize each other. They chat until a giant hand appears and kills one of the Kozaki. Conan and Hobar continue their chat and agree to team up. A group of Kozaki and Hillmen led by Conan sneak into Yaralet. They’re confronted by Atalis who doesn’t want to team up with Conan. Conan is surprised to see his old friend Fafnir is under Atalis’ control.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #221 (May 1994)
By Roy Thomas & Robert Brown

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also on fb), Corinthians of Athros (also in fb), Corinthians of Lonika (in fb), werewomen

FLASHBACK:
Soldiering with Corinthians of Lonika and heading toward Polopponi, Conan hears tales of wolves in the saltlands. They’re ambushed by Corinthians of Athros, Conan is injured and his comrades are killed, so he flees.
SYNOPSIS:
Injured and bloody from a battle, Conan decides to head west into the salt wastes, a grey salt desert, because no one will follow him there. He’s soon surrounded by wolves, but when he’s cornered one turns into a woman. Conan sees himself lying next to a tree, then another werewoman approaches and the two fight each other. One wins and Conan begins running with the victorious werewomen, but notices he’s not leaving any tracks behind like the ladies are. They come to a city and attack the Corinthians of Athros. Conan, now wolf-like, kills one of the soldiers, but when an amulet of Mitra is exposed Conan is shocked and howls. Half-reverted, Conan follows the only werewoman left and they come into an ancient city; Conan thinks it’s pre-Atlantis. Suddenly Conan fights back and the city vanishes. Conan touches a nearby rune and the werewoman suddenly attacks him. Conan destroys the rune and they’re surrounded by a mighty wind that sweeps him away. Conan awakens to Corinthians killing wounded wolves. He attacks and kills them all. After howling at the moon in grief, Conan wanders off.

NOTE:
Adapted from a story by C.L. Moore.

This one was published after Roy’s CONAN SAGA chronology, and so is not included.

The narrator says “Conan is too experienced, too canny an adventurer not to know that, when men shun a place so completely--“ but of course, he was experienced enough to know that even at 16.

There are a handful of “coming soon in SAVSCO” stories set between SAVSCO 44 & SAVSCO 37 in Roy’s chronology, and that’s where this is placed in the SirMuddy chronology. I’ll run with that for now, as it seems plausible, and see what happens in the future.

2nd Story:
By Roy Thomas & Mike Docherty

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his Kozaki/Free Companions, Kezankian Hillmen (inc Taqui, Muzon), Atalis & his guards, Fafnir Demonhand, Prince Thann

SYNOPSIS:
Fafnir defeats Conan and the good guys are tossed in a cell. They begin to break free. Meanwhile, Atalis tries to rape Taqui, but she steals his talisman and runs off. Conan tells her to use it against Fafnir; he crushes the talisman and his hand is branded but his mind is free. Conan chops off one of Atalis’ hands and the palace guards stand down, allowing Conan and friends to leave.
