Marvel v1 #3

Post by Leoparis »

First story: Dr. Strange by Alex Ross, Steve Darnall and Kurt Busiek
Synopsis: Nightmare poses a threat to reality and Strange is his prisoner.
Dr. Strange in astral form
Nightmare
Galactus
Ego the Living Planet
Surtur
Three Celestials (including Arishem)
Note: Analysed in issue 6.

Second story: Sub-Mariner by Alan Weiss
"Summer 1939" in South Pacific (i.e. Dec 1939)
Synopsis: Sent by naval intelligence to the South Pacific, Namor defeats Argno Gwace.
Sub-Mariner
Hong Kong Lil
Old Salty Jim
Professor Efferson
Sea Marshal Strempius
Argno Gwace
Hyacinth

Modern era
Synopsis: Amid Greek architecture, Namor tells a story from 1939.
Namor
Captain America
Note: The Greek architecture shown fits perfectly during the break between pages 15 & 16 of A 285 while the Avengers rest in Olympus. This period when they're both Avengers also fits their camaraderie here. There was no such camaraderie between Cap & Namor in the sixties and seventies. The Invaders series had not been published yet and anyway Cap suffered from memory blanks until the late seventies. Until Namor joined in Avengers 263, they used to be antagonists.

ThIrd story: Watcher by Bill Sienkiewicz
Synopsis: Autobiographical musings from Sienkiewicz.
Uatu
Bill Sienkiewicz
Note: Since this is autobiographical on the part of Sienkiewicz, publication date (2021) is the logical choice. Uatu was just revived in FF6 25.

Fourth story: Rocket Raccoon by Scott Gustafson
Synopsis: Rocket receives unwanted attention from natives.
Rocket Raccoon
inhabitants from Foul Bog 4
Note: Few clues except he's an independent contractor rather than with his original crew so after ANNIS 3/2-FB.

Fifth story: Black Widow by Ryan Heshka
Synopsis: Red Skull is sent to hell as the world's most evil man.
Sept 3, 1945
Black Widow
Hitler
Red Skull
Satan
Charon
Note: All characters in hell as in AIWW 21/2. Goebbels died one day after Hitler, not "months later" so Vanhornluke's original proposition that "Joe" is Goebbels is sound. We have a similar "in hell" situation in CAC 74 with Charon and a Red Skull so we can safely include this Red Skull appearance as well. This experience of Red Skull reaching ultimate evil in hell is mentioned by DeMatteis in CA 298 (18:2).
Marvel 3/5 (brought to hell as most evil man on Earth) > CA 298 (18:2) reaching cosmic evil in hell > CAC 74 (acting as evil spirit in hell)
The hell bodies of Red Skull, Black Widow and Goebbels are of course distinct from their earthly bodies (in suspended animation for the first two).
