House of M: Black Panther

Post by Grendellier »

Hi all, newbie here. I've looked up Black Panther from House of M (Earth-58163) and note that his appearance in Black Panther IV#7 (2005) appears to be missing from the MCP (other characters also appear in that issue). BP4 7 was a special tie-in issue to the HoM event. Has this already been discussed?

House of M was strange.

BP4 7 is in Black Panther's chronology, but in his 616 listing.

House of M, as written at the time, was an altered Earth-616. Some characters could see through the illusion like Hawkeye; he saw different newspaper articles than everyone else. Layla Miller could make other characters remember the world as it should be, etc. So, anyone appearing in the "now" parts of House of M are just the regular Earth-616 characters with altered memories. However, some dead characters also appeared (like Gwen Stacy), so what about those people? And the Wolverine book had flashbacks to something like 30 years ago. How does that work if the world is under an illusion?

The handbooks explained things (briefly) like so: the Scarlet Witch didn't manifest an altered Earth-616 whole cloth, she "overwrote" Earth-616 with an existing reality (Earth-58163), basically layering one reality over another. The dead characters appearing during House of M are actually Earth-58163 characters, and anyone appearing in the past would also be Earth-58163 characters, just in the past (like Wolverine & Mystique in W3 33-35-FBs).

Then, Marvel published comics revealing the history of House of M... Well, these plainly can't be the Earth-616 characters (the events shown didn't happen in the past of Earth-616), so they have to be Earth-58163 characters (like the characters appearing in W3 33-35-FBs).

So basically, any character appearing in a story set in the House of M past is on Earth-58163. Any character (except currently dead ones) appearing set during the "now" of House of M is on Earth-616. Yes, this basically means the "major" House of M story didn't actually happen on the House of M world, but that's the way the "major" House of M story was written. So there's that.

Using Blob as an example:

BLOB/FRED J. DUKES | EARTH-58163
HOM:CW 2
HOM:CW 3
HOM:CW 4
HOM:CW 5 (something like 30-10 years ago)
{HOM:A 2}
HOM:A 3
HOM:A 4
HOM:A 5 (the more recent past)

BLOB/FRED J. DUKES
---
UX 463 ("now," in an altered Earth-616)
UX 464-BTS
UX 465
HOM 6
HOM 7 ("now," in an altered Earth-616)
HOM:DA
GENM 3
---

And another example:

PARKER, DR. GWEN STACY
SM:HOM 1
SM:HOM 2
SM:HOM 3
SM:HOM 4
SM:HOM 5 (the recent past)
HOM 1
HOM 5 (still House of M, because she's dead in Earth-616)

Clear as mud? :)
