Claremont/Sienkiewicz reunion time!

This is set at some point during Claremont's final year on New Mutants. Dani is already a Valkyrie, and the Magus has not yet returned for Warlock; also, Kitty Pryde is still corporeal and at the mansion.

(Warlock makes a joke at the end about "another visit from the Impossible Man," but they meet in NM@ 3, which is after NM 51, which is after they've dispensed with the Magus in NM 50, so he has to be referring to something he's heard about X@ 7.)

My inclination is to put it right after NM 43 (once Roberto has returned from his trip home), but I have a feeling I'm missing some reason it can't go there--any thoughts?

This is a fairly tight period of continuity for the X-books, and since Kitty appears that would be after UX 210, and so between NM 44-45.

While looking into this, I see we have WOSM@ 2 misplaced. It's currently after NM 44 for the New Mutants, but NM 44 refers to WOSM@ 2 in the past tense (with an editor's note and everything!).

Or maybe WOSM@ 2 could take place before Rahne goes to Muir Island. At the end of NM 40 she asks to go home, and Magneto says that she will be there within the week. The next time we see her is already on Muir Island in MCP 22/2.

But we'd still have the problem with Hercules' chronology not matching the New Mutants with NM 81-FB. Hercules has NM 81-FB before WOSM@ 2.

Unfortunately this doesn't work for Dani. In NM #39 she quits the team and heads home. In NM #41 she arrives home, still thinking her teammates are traumatized zombies. (They were cured at the end of #40.)

She can't appear in WOSM@ #2 with her teammates between NM #40-41. Otherwise, by #41, she'd know that they were cured.

The only spot where Dani is a Valkyrie *and* Professor X is still their teacher is a slim window during UX #200. In that issue, the New Mutants are transported from Asgard to Paris, and the X-Men quickly send them off to Muir Island (while the X-Men remain in Paris to attend Magneto's trial). The next time we see the New Mutants is NM #35, where they're already back at the mansion and just learning that Magneto is their new headmaster.

In "War Children," Kitty is the only X-Man at the mansion; the rest of the team is said to be away somewhere. That roughly fits. We could assume that Kitty was the one who took the New Mutants home (by way of Muir Island), and that she returned to Paris (for the rest of UX #200) shortly after dropping them off.

Is there anything else stopping this issue from occurring between UX #200 and NM #35?

Are we sure that "the Professor" is Xavier? Magneto uses the alias "Professor Michael Xavier" in UX 219.
The issue with the New Mutants being at the mansion is that Madelyne Pryor is alone at the Mansion in issues 200-201 when she gives birth and she notes how Kitty keeps calling her to check how she's doing. Although it's possible that after the mess in this issue, the X-Men sent the New Mutants back to Muir Island.

I truly doubt that, just because Magneto once used an alias, the New Mutants would start casually referring to him as "The Professor."

I think Michael's suggestion is sound.
Michael Xavier is the regular alias Magneto used as headmaster, cf. NM 38 & 45 page 7, where he's introduced as such and Kitty calls him "Professor."
On the last page of NM 35, one student calls him "Prof."
In NM 38 page 7, Xian calls him "M'sieu le professeur" and Sam says, "Professor." Later, Sharon calls him "Professor Xavier."
There may be more instances.

Michel's move of WOSM@ 2 after NM 44 was also correct. At the end of WOSM@ 2 Warlock decides to never watch TV again. Per Mirage's comment in NM 44 he's still doing it. NM 44 (Mirage complains Warlock watches too much TV) > WOSM@ 2 (Warlock vows never to watch TV)

Those are examples of the New Mutants calling Magneto "Professor" to his face. They're showing him respect because he's their teacher. (And in NM #38 they're all still in shock, so it's not the best example of how they'd normally interact with him.)

Are there any examples of the New Mutants referring to Magneto as "The Professor" when he's not around? To me that seems weird.

Also, I agree with a post-NM #44 placement for WOSM@ #2 -- but does anyone really think that Warlock's vow to never watch TV again would last more than a day? He watches TV in New Mutants Summer Special #1 -- should that also be placed before WOSM@ #2? (Heck, Ann Nocenti wrote both issues. Even she didn't think Warlock was serious!)
