Conan the Barbarian v3 #1-12

Post by Col_Fury »

I’ve been pecking away at this for a while, but now we’re ready to go!

The Life & Death of Conan

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #1 [#276] (March 2019)
The Weird of the Crimson Witch
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fbs), Greshan (in fb), Crimson Witch (also in fb) & her Children of the Blood-Red Doom (Zazella & Razza), Razazel (Arch-Demon of the Elder Night, vo in fb), Black Dragons, Zamorans (in fb), zombies (in fb), Turanian army

FLASHBACK:
Born on the battlefield, Conan’s umbilical cord is cut by his mother (page 1, new). Conan fights in Zamora’s Maul and wins. He meets the beautiful Crimson Witch, who seduces him. After fooling around for a bit Conan realizes too late that she’s an old hag and a witch; she’s poisoned him and he passes out. Conan awakes in an underground upside-down castle; the Crimson Witch wants Conan’s blood to bring Razazel to this world. Conan escapes and nearly decapitates her before leaving (pages 3 - 23).
SYNOPSIS:
King Conan sits on his throne in Tarantia (page 2). Later, after a battle with the Turanian army, Conan wanders among the dead where he meets two children gathering corpses. When they mention Razazel he takes pause, only to be surprised when he’s attacked by the Crimson Witch (basically an animated corpse). He fights her off to protect the kids, but the kids stab him in the back, revealing themselves to be the Crimson Witch’s children (pages 24 - 30).

NOTE:
In Zamora, Conan is young but has already killed many men, beasts and wizards. Also, he’s traveled on the Road of Kings (a reference to COB 7-12). He’s in Zamora and around the Maul in SAVSCO 53-58 and leaves for Shadizar at the end, so I’ll say this happens before SAVSCO 53.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #2 [#277] (March 2019)
The Savage Border
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Picts, Ghost Snakes (also in fb, inc King Snake), Zazella, Razza

FLASHBACK:
Conan continues to fight the Ghost Snakes.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan is helping the Aquilonian settlers clear out Picts in the western frontier. He’s surrounded by giant Ghost Snakes and fights them until he passes out. He wakes up in a Pict shaman’s tent who has tended to Conan’s wounds. The Shaman convinces Conan to help the Picts kill the Ghost Snakes and guarantees safe passage back to Aquilonia when it’s finished. Conan spends weeks with the Picts and eventually gains their respect and Conan learns the Picts aren’t all that different than Cimmerians. After killing the King Snake the shaman offers for Conan to stay with the Picts but he declines. Back in Velitium, Conan realizes he prefers the Picts’ wine to Aquilonia’s. Meanwhile, the Crimson Witch’s kids spy on Conan from an alley.

NOTE:
This works pretty well after SAVSCO 27, where Conan swears revenge against the Picts and before SAVSCO 46 where he’s promoted leading to him becoming King.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #3 [#278] (April 2019)
Cimmerians Don’t Pray
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Red Tree Hill people (inc Inquisitor & his guards), Crimson Witch, Zazella, Razza

SYNOPSIS:
In western Nemedia, Conan has been caught stealing and is hung on the Red Tree; he’s too heavy and the branch breaks. After uprooting the Red Tree Conan is overrun and tossed in prison. Days later he’s taken back to the tree, but when his would-be executioner raises his axe to chop off Conan’s limbs he’s struck by lightning. The mining villagers let Conan go (pages 1 - 18). Years later, the Crimson Witch and her kids cart King Conan off the battlefield (19 - 20).

NOTE:
Conan is drawn to look younger here, possibly in his late teens or early twenties. He’s in or near Nemedia here, and he’s in Belverus (western Nemedia) in COB 52 looking for work. Before that looks good.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #4 [#279] (May 2019)
The King in the Cage
By Jason Aaron & Gerardo Zaffino

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his lion, Black Dragons, Aquiloneans, Argossean kidnappers, Corinthian cutthroats, cult of rapists

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVSCO 52, no new information.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan has been king for months and now he’s going through detox (basically). He’s bored and doesn’t like being king. He’s gifted a lion and he tries to fight it, but ends up taking it as a pet instead. To ease his boredom he becomes a masked vigilante, which does make him feel better. Later, King Conan returns the lion to the jungles of Kush, not wanting the lion to live in a cage for the rest of his life.

NOTE:
Early in Conan’s time as King, and the end of the issue says this happens before he marries Zenobia, which is nice. After SAVSCO 52 and before SAVSCO 214 works for me.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #5 [#280] (June 2019)
The Captain of the Ship of the Dead
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), a wooden idol (in fb), Crimson Witch, Zazella, Razza, Black Corsairs (in fb), pirates (others in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Conan is on his way to Messantia to sell a wooden idol he stole from the acolytes of Yimsha, but when they reach the Black Coast the ship he’s on is attacked by pirates looking for the idol. During the fight blood spilled onto the idol and it became a giant tentacled beast, killing everyone around Conan. When Conan managed to kill the monster it burst into flames, damaging the ship. Conan started tossing corpses into the sea, but when sharks ate the bodies they were transformed into tentacled beasts. Conan decided to stack the bodies in the ship’s hull, instead.
SYNOPSIS:
On the Southern Sea, Conan is the only one left on the ship of the dead, everyone else having died three weeks ago. When Conan sailed into a storm he fought a transformed rat who had feasted on the corpses. As Conan began to lose his sanity another pirate ship approached. Conan attacked the ship and after he killed a third of its crew they voted for Conan to be their new captain. He ordered his old ship burned and told his new crew the story of what he had been through. Conan realized that while he didn’t like most other people, he was not meant to be alone (pages 1 - 19). Years later, the Crimson Witch and her kids bring King Conan to an underground castle (20).

NOTE:
This is years after Conan sailed with Bêlit and also at least after he captained some Barachan ships. So at least at some point after M/SSPEC 2. Also, Conan guesses that Thoth-Amon sent the pirates to get the idol, so he at least knows who Thoth-Amon is at this point. Doesn’t mean Thoth-Amon is -BTS here, though.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #6 [#281] (July 2019)
The Sole Survivor
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Yezdigerd, Crimson Witch, Zazella, Razza, Stygian Army (also in fb), Turanian Army (also in fb, inc Bahram, Hormizd (corpse, also in fb))

FLASHBACK:
A mercenary working for the Turanian army, Conan survives a Stygian ambush.
SYNOPSIS:
As Prince Yezdigerd began taking over the duties of the king of Turan, he expanded his army and started invading other regions, most recently Stygia. Conan is found as the sole survivor of an ambush. Later, Conan tries to warn the Turanians of another ambush; the only ones to survive were those who listened to Conan. When they returned to camp Conan tried to tell the great commanders to bring ships across the desert so they could attack from the River Styx. The Stygians attacked the camp and the commanders were all trampled to death by their own stampeding horses. Conan is brought to King Yezdigerd in chains and leaves as a great commander. As Conan leads raids against the Stygians, the Crimson Witch and her kids gather the corpses they leave behind (pages 1 - 19). Years later, the Crimson Witch and her kids prepare to kill King Conan (20).

NOTE:
At the end of the issue, it says this takes place before Conan leads the Kozaki against Yezdigerd. So, before COB 275 for Yezdigerd and likely before COB 252 for Conan. Conan’s in Shadrizar in SAVSCO 98/2, which borders Turan, and is in Khoraja in SAVSCO 181/2, which is further away from Turan. BUT! The action is near the River Styx here, which is close to Khoraja. After SAVSCO 181/2 it is, then.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #7 [#282] (August 2019)
Barbarian Love
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan & his escorts (inc Aine, Shishi, Zawadi), Lord Pheidus & his guards, Zazella, Razza, Crimson Witch (op), Tortage residents

SYNOPSIS:
In Tortage on the Barachan Isles, Conan pays for five escorts to accompany him on a long trip. They travel to Argos but Conan doesn’t speak, leaving the ladies to wonder what he wants from them. When they camp the ladies offer their services, but Conan instead dreams of Bêlit. As they travel Conan impresses one of the ladies when he recognizes her as a former Zamoula slave, and the others when he saves them from a pack of wolves. When they arrive at their destination, Conan reveals they’re looking for Lord Pheidus who has a fancy boat excursion once a year. They get on the boat but Conan is immediately drugged; when he wakes Pheidus reveals he knew about Conan’s plan to kill him. The ladies help free Conan and they kill the guards before Conan throws Pheidus to the alligators. Conan leaves Pheidus’ treasure to the ladies and wanders off (pages 1 - 19). Years later, the Crimson Witch’s kids start stabbing King Conan to death and he cries out for Zenobia (20).

NOTE:
Pheidus helped cause Bêlit’s father’s death. Also, this happens years after COB 100.

My favorite line: You carry her (Bêlit) with you, always. Beneath your brooding and your melancholies… you’re a lovestruck romantic, Conan of Cimmeria. It’d be a shame if you never let yourself love again.

He’s in the area of the Baracha Isles between SAVSCO 67 & 94, and that’s before Red Nails. Works for me.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #8 [#283] (September 2019)
Homecoming
By Jason Aaron, Gerardo Zaffino & Garry Brown

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Thoth-Amon, Snowhawk Tribe Cimmerians (inc Gwawl, Ailill, Bear Shaman, Conan’s grandmother)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan returns to Cimmeria bearing gifts from the southern lands, but learns a sickness has turned the Snowhawk Tribe into cannibals. Conan learns from the Bear Shaman that the sickness was caused by Thoth-Amon, allowing him to control the Cimmerians from afar. Conan doesn’t know who Thoth-Amon is. Conan confronts the Cimmerians and when his grandmother sees the beautiful gifts he brought she begins to shake the spell; when she sees Conan bleeding she beheads Gwawl, the dog keeper who was infected first. With Gwawl dead the spell is lifted on everyone. In Stygia, Thoth-Amon wonders how Conan keeps messing up his plans.

NOTE:
Thoth-Amon is upset with Conan because he messed up the wizard’s plans in COB 7. That doesn’t necessarily mean this has to happen before COB 68, though; COB 7 is just the first time he got angry with Conan.

This is not the first time Conan returns to Cimmeria; various Cimmerians comment on how much bigger Conan is than the last time he returned. This is the only appearance of his unnamed grandmother that I know of.

I think this works right before COB 127 where he’s already returned to Cimmeria. He’s shown arriving here.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #9 [#284] (November 2019)
The God Below
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan, White Witch (Lady Liv), the God Below (the Undergod, the Leviagod), Leech-men, Razazel

SYNOPSIS:
The last place Conan remembered being was in the mountains of Ghulistan near Vendhya, but after an avalanche he now finds himself in a cave. Conan is attacked by various monsters from his past and learns he’s agreed to kill the God Below for the White Witch, the being responsible for the illusions from his memories. Conan kills the God Below and they make it to the surface. As Conan leaves he mentions he never saw the last illusion before; the White Witch stops herself from telling Conan that he will in the future (pages 1 - 20:2). Years later, Razazel reaches out for Conan’s blood (20:3).

NOTE:
The illusions of monsters past are Thak (COB 11), Frost Giants (SAVT 1), Ghost Snakes (SAVSCO 26), a Son of Set (Sschaaronn as it turns out, from COB 7), Omm (COB 13), deformed sharks (COB3 5), a dragon of Xuchotl (SAVT 2), Yag-Kosha (COB 4), the Winged Horror (COB 100) and Razazel, a monster from his future.

We’re past Red Nails at this point, and close to the time Conan becomes king.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #10 [#285] (December 2019)
The Children of the Great Red Doom
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Crimson Witch, Zazella, Razza, White Witch, Razazel, Lord Bevel Stonemarrow, Stygian Army

SYNOPSIS:
The Crimson Witch kills Lord Bevel Stonemarrow in another attempt to raise Razazel, and as has happened many times, fails to do so. She needs a better adventurer with better blood. However, Stonemarrow did give her something useful; she’s pregnant with twins. Nine months later she gives birth and names them Zazella and Razza, the Children of the Great Red Doom. Years later, having heard of a great fighter, the Crimson Witch disguises herself and prepares to leave for the Maul in Zamora (pages 1 - 6). The kids watch as Conan nearly decapitates the Crimson Witch and sets fire to her underground castle (pages 7 - 10, during COB3 1-FB). Soon after, the kids start murdering people for their blood to keep the Crimson Witch’s corpse animated and to feed themselves (page 11 - 13). Years later, the kids watch as Conan survives a Stygian ambush (page 14, right before COB3 6-FB). The kids watch as Conan celebrates, having defeated the God Below (page 15:1, after COB3 9). The kids watch as Conan fights mutated sharks on the ship of the dead (page 15:2 - 15:3, during COB3 5). The kids watch as Conan and his lion go on vigilante adventures (page 15:4, during COB3 4). The Crimson Witch and her kids bring King Conan to her underground castle (page 16:1 - 16:2, before COB3 5). The kids continue to stab Conan and his blood activates tendrils that will allow Razazel to enter this realm. Conan breaks free and battles the Crimson Witch, but the castle starts to crumble and debris crushes Conan, killing him (pages 16:3 - 20, after COB3 7 (20)).

NOTE:
That was helpful! So we roughly have:

COB3 10 (1 - 6)
COB3 1 (3 - 23)-FB ~ COB3 10 (7 - 10)
COB3 10 (11 - 13)
COB3 3 (1 - 18) (Conan the thief, young)
COB3 8 (another return to Cimmeria)
COB3 10 (14)
COB3 6 (before the Kozaki)
COB3 7 (probably)
COB3 9 (after Red Nails)
COB3 10 (15:1)
COB3 5 (1 - 19) ~ COB3 10 (15:2 - 15:3)
COB3 2 (shortly before King Conan)
COB3 4 ~ COB3 10 (15:4) (early King Conan)
COB3 1 (after Zenobia’s death)
COB3 3 (19 - 20)
COB3 10 (16:1 - 16:2)
COB3 5 (20)
COB3 6 (20)
COB3 7 (20)
COB3 9 (20:3)
COB3 10 (16:3 - 20)

COB3 9 has Conan near the Vendhya area, and then COB3 5 has him on the Southern Sea heading toward Messantia (near Zingara and the Baracha Isles). After Red Nails, SAVSCO 184, 127, 124 and 184 has Conan bouncing around between near Vendhy, near the Viyalet Sea and near Turan. Then suddenly in SAVSCO 92, he’s in a port town on the Zingaran Coast. I’m going to say this is where COB3 9 & 5 go, explaining how Conan got to Zingara.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN v3 #11 [#286] (January 2020)
by Crom
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Corin, Greshan, Crom, Razazel, Zazella, Razza

SYNOPSIS:
Conan wakes up in Cimmeria as a child, knowing something is wrong when he sees his parents. He leaves the village to climb a mountain to see where he is. As he climbs the mountain he ages, but is attacked by various animals that kill him. When he’s able to, he continues to climb. Reaching the top a thunderous voice tells him to leave. When Conan learns he’s speaking with Crom he realizes he has died. Conan’s ready to accept his fate until he learns Razazel is going to ravage the world for a while and Crom plans to do nothing about it. Conan attacks Crom, demanding he do something; Crom does. Crom curses Conan to live a long life to wither and fade with age, regretting he died as a faded version of himself late in life. As Razazel nears this realm Zazella and Razza celebrate until Conan returns.

NOTE:
Yes, Conan died. But he didn’t stay dead.

The Power in the Blood
By Jason Aaron & Mahmud Asrar

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Conn, Razazel, Zazella (also in fb), Razza (also in fb), Black Dragons, Tortage residents (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
In Tortage, the Crimson Witch’s kids are still angry about her death at Conan’s hand. They’re approached by pirates who want to put them into slavery but a drunken Conan saves them. Conan hears the kids call him Conan which confuses him, but he shrugs it off and wanders off singing.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan fights the now transformed kids until reinforcements arrive: Conn and the Black Dragons. Together they defeat Razazel and the kids, sending them back to wherever Razazel came from. As they travel home Conan realizes that Crom’s idea of a curse is what he considers life and knows that his days of wandering aren’t yet done and that he’ll set foot on new lands beyond the edge of the world that no Cimmerian ever has or will see beside himself. Conan looks forward to meeting this strange New World.

NOTE:
And there you go. Conan of the Isles can still happen. :)

The flashback happens when Conan is still "young," and when the kids would still be freshly bitter about their mother's death. Conan's in the Tortage area between COB 57-58, shortly before he meets Bêlit, still young and carefree, making me like this spot.

Conan is specifically said to be 17yo here (4:6), and he's been thieving his way across Nemedia for months (3:2). This may need to go somewhat earlier in the scheme. Apart from a little fine-tuning on your part, everything else lines up pretty closely with what i had, so that's nice.
Out in the Land Down-Under, beneath a rocky outcrop, deep within the back paddock, dwells the Stray Lamb.

Good catch! How did I miss that?

OK:

SAVSCO 180 (17 yrs old)
SAVSCO 174-FB
SAVSCO 174 (fledgling thief, leads into COB 4)
COB 4
SAVSCO 165-FB-FB (epilogue to COB 4)
SAVSCO 99/2
SAVSCO 100 (18 yrs old)

Conan meets a Brythunian in SAVSCO 99/2, and Brythunia borders Numedia. The story doesn't say if they're in Numedia or Brythunia; he could be in either. I'll say before SAVSCO 99/2.

In SAVSCO 99/2 Conan is still in Zamora (Arenjun to be precise). Conan first travels in Nemedia in COB 7, which we just discussed moving in accordance with KSCO. Perhaps COB3 3 fits best somewhere around COB 7 and CO:SWAR?

Possibly.

I have Conan noted as 17 years old in SAVSCO 180, but I'll have to double check to see if that came from Roy Thomas' chronology or if it's noted as his 17th birthday or something. As it is, we basically have two stories between comics where he's noted as 17 and 18. He has a whole year to be wandering around all over the place.

But still, I'll double check his age references and plug in the KSCO /2 moves and see how it all fits together on a map.

Teamwork! :)

Conan’s ages are from Roy’s CONAN SAGA chronology, but I had the wrong story for when he’s 18. SAVSCO 180 Conan’s about 17, and by SAVSCO 100/2 he’s 18, which is after COB 12. COB3 3 would then be able to happen between COB 3 and COB 13 (basically).

In COB3 3, Conan is 17 years old and isn’t a fledgling thief, but not a master thief, either. He learns some thieving tricks in COB 4, so presumably after that.

Roy’s chronology says Conan gets distracted after COB 7 (apparently, given KSCO /2, very distracted) and has some adventures in Nemedia and surrounding areas in SAVSCO 118 and 161, and ends up near the Nemedian/Corinthian border (so southern Nemedia) at the start of COB 8, whose story continues through COB 12. After that, Conan heads away from Nemedia toward Arenjun to appear in SAVSCO 53-55, 217-218 & 56-58. From there he starts heading north.

The only spot I’m seeing for COB3 3 (which technically lasts “months”) that fits all the criteria (age, occupation, geography) is before SAVSCO 118.

As for KSCO /2, it says that COB 7 was not that long ago, and he’s thinking about the Son of Set again. Given his geography, this will have to happen a little bit after CO:SWAR because he’s already in Arenjun in KSCO /2 and he arrives there in SAVSCO 180.

As for Conan ending up in Stygia at the end of CO:SWAR… everyone else involved magically ended up where they started, so why can’t Conan?

Works perfectly there as I can tell, realistically has to be after COB 7 ("been thieving his way across Nemedia for months"), but likely before SAVSCO 118 as you say, by which point he's in eastern Ophir.

In regards to COB 7, it must take place in numeric sequence and not before COB 4 as KSCO /2 implies, as COB 7 itself references Yag-Kosha from COB 4.

Based on my movement of SAVSCO 53-58 & 217-218 (discussed here: https://chronologyproject.com/phpbb2/vi ... =2&t=18497), this needs adjusting slightly. In Roy's chronology, COB:CIM is (incorrectly) placed as if taking place on Conan's return journey from Zamboula after SAVSCO 58, despite the story stating it takes place in eastern Corinthia, near the border with Zamora. As such, this should take place after COB:CIM, still remaining as Conan's first journey in his return to Zamora, but now accounting for the movement of issues around it.
