American soldiers only parachuted on mainland Japan on Aug 30, 1945, after Japan had agreed to surrender, too late for Steve Rogers...
At the Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945), the island was uninhabited by civilians. Unless we reason those pacifistic vampires went there on purpose... That's one possibility.
This could also refer to Okinawa, invaded on April 1st, 1945, even if that date is rather late. Previously no Captain America story placed him in the Pacific Theater in 1945. But Captain America has been placed at the start of many offensives (Guadalcanal, Anzio, Sicily, D-Day, etc.) so this matches that pattern.
