For the record, it doesn't matter when a story is published, but when a character's first appearance occurs. See the numbering for Black Knight, for an example. That being said, I agree with your point; John Garrett from EL:A would be II.

I did not think chronological appearance had such an importance. That being said, my point is that this John Garrett should be listed.
