There's an issue analysis for Guardians of the Galaxy: Best Story Ever here, which points out some of the problems. I'm not sure why the framing story can't be canon, however, even if the story told by Star-Lord is apocryphal..

I have read GOTG:Best Story Ever and it is clearly intended to be set in the 616 universe, given the references to past events that only happened in the comics and not in the movies (Nebula possessing the Infinity Gauntlet, Gamora's Grace, Nebula claiming to be Thanos' granddaughter...).
There are some elements that seem taken more from the movie continuity but overall it seems well grounded in the 616 universe.

Just want to point out that in terms of X-Men chronology, the Monsters Unleashed event should occur before X-Men prime v2 (1-28) and UXv4 #19.

The X-teams' line-ups change in X-Men Prime (Young Jean leaves Storm's team and rejoins the other time displaced X-Men and they leave the mansion. Also, Oya and Genesis are no longer part of that team).

In Monsters Unleashed 1, Storm's X-Men team appears and Jean is with them. And the most obvious, the All-New X-Men team has a dedicated issue for the crossover, and in it, both Oya and Genesis appear as part of the team.

In Monsters Unleashed 2, Storm says she contacted Magneto's team (Magneto's team disbands between IvX and UXv4 #19).

I know MU has a lot of constraints in the big picture, but I wanted to point this out anyway.

Edit:
Jean is shown with short hair in X-Men Prime, however, it is shown as a sort of "things to come" panel. In terms of actual events on the issue, she is shown in the Danger Room recording, still with long hair.

Still, I think the entire arc of ANW 13-18, and OMLv2 16-18 should go before Prime, as she has long hair in those issues.
Also, in EXX 20 she behaves as if she is still part of the team, but since the issue deals with the X-Men moving out of Limbo, it makes sense for it to happen after XPrime (1-28) BUT it should be placed before X-Men Blue 1, where Jean is depicted having short hair.
