CONAN

Post by Col_Fury »

Conan's back at Marvel soon so it's probably time to figure out his existing chronology.

Back in the mid-’90s, Roy Thomas put together a Conan chronology and published it in CONAN SAGA #72-95, then a Red Sonja chronology in SAGA #96, and a Kull chronology in SAGA #97. If there’s anyone alive that knows more about Marvel’s Conan than Roy Thomas, I would have no idea who that would be. I guess I’ll take his word on things.

From what I can see COB 22 reprints COB 1, COB@ 1 reprints COB 2 & 4, COB@ 3 reprints SAVSCO 2-3, GSCO 5 reprints COB 12 & 14-15, KULLB 1 reprints KULLC 1-2 and SAVSCO@ 1 is all reprints. SAVSCO 24 is a retelling of COB 4, SAVSCO 59 is a retelling of COB 37 and SAVSCO 222 is a retelling of COB 1. I don't know if these retellings can fit with the originals, but I guess we'll find out eventually.

I’m not seeing CO@ 6 in Roy's chronology, but I could have missed it.

This doesn't include anything post-1995, since it's from CONAN SAGA (which was cancelled with #97).

I haven't read ANY Marvel Conan, but I'm slowly filling in my collection and plan to get to it kind-of soon-ish (a 2019 resolution!).

Key (potentially):
CO – CONAN (1-11) - 1995

I'd guess you've never seen the SirMuddy chronology then. It's based on the Roy Thomas chronology but with all the stuff published later and with the kinks ironed out.

Although I've got a feeling Marvel is gonna retcon all the old stuff out of continuity anyway, especially with the first Jason Aaron having said "our opening 12-issue arc will thread together many different periods and aspects of Conan's journey, from Cimmeria to Aquilonia and beyond. That's why this story is called 'The Life and Death of Conan.' "

I have no doubt that SirMuddy is a big fan, but Roy wrote/edited/shepherded Conan at Marvel for nearly 30 years. I'm sure SirMuddy is well-versed (and I'll see if I can find his chronology (which would be more up-to-date, as I'm sure he worked on it at some point after 1995) somewhere and take a look at it), but c'mon. It's Roy Thomas.

As far as retcons go, we'll see what happens but the existing Conan stuff is definitely Earth-616. Kulan Gath met the X-Men, Red Sonja met Spider-Man (or at least her ghost did) twice, and that's just off the top of my head. This new stuff will likely end up being it's own thing (like how the Dark Horse Conan had no ties to the classic Marvel Conan).

Oh of course, I only used that quote to transition into my mention of SirMuddy's chronology.

And I have a good feeling the new stuff will be regarded as "canon", would definitely not be surprised to have some form of crossover.
And in my opinion, those clarifications of canon (as I shall refer to them as), do not necessarily make the old Conan stuff canon.

But yeah, should be interesting to read the new stuff, what with three ongoings and undoubtedly countless minis.

Boy, are you gonna be in for a treat - some of the best comics Marvel released during the 70's, especially the early Barry Smith issues. :D

Re SirMuddy:
Ah, gotcha. :)

There are a lot more connections than just the two I mentioned. Kull was king of Atlantis before it fell into the ocean, Solomon Kane met Dracula (I think?) and a bunch of other stuff I'm not remembering. Classic Marvel Conan is undoubtedly in Earth-616's past, there's just no way around it.

My feeling is that the new Conan stuff will be as "canon" as the current Marvel Star Wars stuff is. It counts toward itself, if you get what I mean. I remember when Marvel announced they were getting the Star Wars license back everyone was wondering when the first crossover would happen. It's been, what, almost five years and nothing? I dunno, anything's possible, and I don't know anything more than any other regular Joe/Jane out there. BUT! I am looking forward to the new stuff coming out next year as well.

Is what the MCP currently has for SOLOMON KANE complete, or are we missing some bits?

But yeah, feel free to post what you have. Just make sure you give credit to whomever when you do.

-edit-

Looking at the current SOLOMON KANE chronology, I just realized that CONAN SAGA had a few original stories.

COSAGA 14/3, 30/3, 50/3 & 69/3 are new. COSAGA 50/3 is already in the MCP.

I was under the impression that this wasn't canon? Especially seeing as the Spider-Man strips aren't, are they?

Has anything official said that? Some of them were reprinted in a Conan Annual or something like that.

IIRC they contradict some stuff in the definitely canon stuff.

They weren't included in Roy "include everything possible" Thomas' chronology in CONAN SAGA (but they were reprinted in CONAN SAGA).

If Roy couldn't find a way to make them fit...

Fair enough. I've never read them, so I didn't know if they fit or not.

A related question: since Elric of Melnibone appears in two issues of Conan the Barbarian, will he get an MCP chronology that covers those two issues as well as his other Marvel appearances (I think in Epic stuff)?

The Conan comics strip basically retold existing Marvel strips, different enough so they probably would not be canon.

I did the Solomon Kane series in full:

COSAGA 14/3, 30/3, 50/3 & 69/3 are new. COSAGA 50/3 is already in the MCP.
Are COSAGA 30/3 and 69/3 new stories? I don't have the Conan Saga issues, but it looks like these might be reprints from SAVSCO 19/2 and KULLC 11, respectively. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!
