An Attempt at Some Marvel Comics 1000 Placements

Hyborian Age

Marvel Comics 1000/32-FB [Conan and Skornn rob the royal treasury in Shadizar the Wicked; Skornn tells Conan he believes he has a destiny to rule, and if he ever steals from him, to not take it personally] (Possible placement before Conan the Barbarian 6)

Marvel Comics 1000/32 [A thief, Skornn, is brought before King Conan, but he is an old comrade for Conan’s days as a thief in Shadizar, and he allows Skornn to leave with his ill-gotten gains] (Possible placement before Conan the Barbarian 285)

Age of Camelot

Marvel Comics 1000/17-FB [Whispers are heard of revolt against King Arthur and his Camelot, rumors of a hidden guild with secret knowledge of the stars and their workings; Sir Percy of Scandia, armed with the Ebony Blade of Other-Britain, searches out their lair, deep in the forest, where he crosses swords with their own champion, a commoner wearing a strange mask which appears to be woven from starlight by the warlocks of the guild, the Eternity Mask; the battle lasts three days, and Sir Percy wins by a hair’s breadth, but is left too weak to recover the mask which made his opponent his equal] (Suggestions? Obviously sometime after Black Knight 5)

Middle Ages

Marvel Comics 1000/17 [Gildas the Wise records an incident in which whispers came of revolt against King Arthur and his Camelot, rumors of a hidden guild with secret knowledge of the stars and their workings; Sir Percy of Scandia, armed with the Ebony Blade of Other-Britain, searches out their lair, deep in the forest, where he crosses swords with their own champion, a commoner wearing a strange mask which appears to be woven from starlight by the warlocks of the guild, the Eternity Mask; the battle lasts three days, and Sir Percy wins by a hair’s breadth, but is left too weak to recover the mask which made his opponent his equal]{1519}

Nineteenth Century

Marvel Comics 1000/10 [When Jim Gardley, the Masked Rider, dies, 30yo Dr Matt Masters takes the Eternity Mask and sets out to avenge his death]{1880} (Possible placement after Marvel Mystery Comics 10/6 for Masked Raider, before Marvel Westerns: Strange Westerns 1 for Black Rider)

Marvel Comics 1000/19 [80yo Matt Masters, the Black Rider, lures Dennis Piper to his home, telling him he’s dying of cancer, and that he’s been watching him, and knows he’s a thief, a scoundrel, possibly a communist, and a rebel, and that he wars against wealth and power for those who have none; telling Piper that the Eternity Mask gives him a fair chance against any opponent, he tosses it to Piper, warning him there are those who will come for it, those who made it, and when they do, to make sure they still believe in it]{1930} (Possible placement after Marvel Westerns: Strange Westerns for Black Rider)

Marvel Comics 1000/1 [Professor Phineas Horton invites a trio of scientific investigators known as the Scientists Guild or the Three X’s, Dr Maris Morlack, Dr Carlo Zota, and Dr Jerome Hamilton, to view his creation]

Marvel Comics 1000/2 [The Three X’s, otherwise known as the Scientists Guild, call on Mr Piper at the Ferret Detective Agency, and he hands over the Eternity Mask he used as The Operative]{1940} *Also see the discussion on The Ferret here.. http://www.chronologyproject.com/phpbb2 ... 01&p=57683

Marvel Comics 1000/3 [Steve Rogers is escorted to Project Rebirth, passing Project Thunderer, where the Three X’s, otherwise known as the Scientists Guild, are about to create the Thunderer] (Suggestions for Steve Rogers’ placement? Probably somewhere just before Marvels Project 4 (10:1 - 10:3)-FB?)

Marvel Comics 1000/8 [Learning of Bill Nasland’s death, the Thunderer tells Carlo Zota he’s quit working for him, but he’s keeping the Eternity Mask, and warns him not to come for it]

Marvel Comics 1000/12 [Robert Grayson, Marvel Boy, is attracted to a cave by a message broadcasting on a frequency beyond any current broadcast range, where he discovers the corpse of Jerry Carstairs, the Dark Avenger; the message plays out, warning Marvel Boy to look for the Scientists Guild, a group of four individuals who believe they’re the X-People, the Next Wave who change the world; the message warns Marvel Boy to get the Eternity Mask from them, the mask that saved America]{1956} (For Marvel Boy, this is likely soon after ASTON 6)

* Marvel Boy discovers the corpse of Jerry Carstairs, previously known as Thunderer, then Black Avenger, and here called Dark Avenger. He also appears later, alive in CA 442 and Ant-Man: Last Days.

Marvel Comics 1000/20 [After experimenting with the Eternity Mask for four years, Dr Maris Morlak tells the other members of the Scientists Guild that the wearer should be the equal of them all, the ultimate merging of intellects, but they’re missing something; Dr Carlo Zota tells him it’s a matter of intent, reminding them that the Thunderer used it to fight those who would rule the world, but now they plan to rule the world; Dr Jerome Hamilton protests that they plan to save the world, and with Dr Wladyslav Shinski’s longevity treatments, they have all the time they need; Shinski tells them he only wanted to earn a place among the Three X’s, and he’s glad they accepted his ideas, when he shows them his designs for the evolution of Dr Phineas Horton’s flawed creations, sayng that like them, the Scientists Guild will evolve to a new form; pronouncing the Guild dead, Shinski proclaims them to be the Enclave]{1958}

This also fits with the 1978 placement)

Secret Empire to War of the Realms

Marvel Comics 1000/80 [The Silver Surfer has once again become the Herald of Galactus, but chooses to do good] (Probably soon after Infinity Countdown)

Marvel Comics 1000/4 [Roberto Da Costa explains to Jimmy Woo that he has discovered a trio of scientific investigators, known variously as the Scientists Guild and the Three X’s, who were present at the unveiling of the original Human Torch, and had a hand in transforming Jerry Carstairs into the Thunderer, aka the Dark Avenger, but have since vanished]

Marvel Comics 1000/9 [Jimmy Woo joins Namora on a mission aboard one of Bob Grayson’s flying saucers, telling her that the Dark Avenger, who used to operate in the 1940’s as the Thunderer, is the key to something he’s investigating; Namora explains that Namor’s recent actions have destabilized undersea relations, and she’s had to take drastic measures to prevent the emboldened Deviant Lemurians from invading Micronesia; Jimmy explains that when he was de-aged, he lost every memory after 1959, when Bob Grayson, who has been listening in, tells Jimmy he’s met the Dark Avenger, and whatever this is, it’s not him, it’s the Eternity Mask] (Probably during the gap between DP7 9 & UX5 10-15)

Marvel Comics 1000/16 [Jimmy Woo asks Ken Hale, the Gorilla-Man, to mind-link with the Celestial to find the location of the Eternity Mask]
Marvel Comics 1000/18 [As Jimmy Woo battles some Hydra agents, he tells Roberto Da Costa that Ken Hale could only get part of the story, but that Marvel Boy had it right, the Eternity Mask is the key to every story since Camelot fell, and that sightings include the Peasants’ Revolt, the English Civil War, and the Mayflower, when it was brought to America by occultists hidden amongst the Puritan Pilgrims; Jimmy tells Roberto that Ben Franklin is supposed to have harnessed its magic to help win the Revolution] (Probably between M/K20TH 1-6 & WH 8-12)

Marvel Comics 1000/71 [Adam Brashear, aka the Blue Marvel, helps Jimmy Woo and Night Thrasher put the pieces of the puzzle together, recapping that in the Age of Camelot, a group of renegade occultists created a magic mask that made peasants the equals of King Arthur’s knights; the mask then came for the American Revolution and stayed, as did the occultists, who evolved into a Guild of Scientists, who then evolved again into a cabal of mad scientists known as the Enclave; the Mask and the Enclave then started a war that may still be going on today; Adam tells them it puts a lot of his cases over the past few decades into context; Jimmy Woo wonders where the Mask is now, if the members of the Enclave are still alive, and if they killed Hamilton; telling Adam and Night Thrasher that he misses Roberto, Jimmy wonders if they’ve just become the new Three X’s]

Scientists' Guild / Enclave in Marvel Comics 1000

Post by Leoparis »

The Scientists' Guild, the Three X's and the Enclave are the same group.
https://www.bleedingcool.com/2019/08/27 ... -spoilers/
https://www.bleedingcool.com/2019/10/02 ... -incoming/

The first story of MC 1000 occurs right after a reprint of panel 3 page 2 of the Human Torch story in Marvel Comics #1.
The events are the same as those on that page. Ewing is repeating the original dialog from panels 3 and 5 on panels 1-2 of MC 1000.

(Note: Brubaker omitted that scene in Marvels Project, probably because it was a repeat of the previous scene with the journalists but Ewing cleverly found a reason for Epting and D'Armata to draw it. A scene to add in future reprints of Marvels Project.)

The dialog on panels 3-5 is new so these panels need to be inserted. I have tried several spots and they are all awkward. The best one by far is to have the new panels 3-5 of MC 1000 after panel 5 page 2 of the original. It fits with the original dialog of MC 1 2:5 being at the top of MC 1000 1:3. Also Horton's dialog in MC 1 2:6 "It might be spontaneous combustion" can refer to the demonstration he just did on panel 5 of MC 1000.

We can also include the single appearance of the Three X's in Mystic Comics 1 in the Enclave chronology (before they get the Eternity Mask and create the Thunderer). Hamilton is not in IH Annual 6, he's even mentioned as dead in that issue.

Steve Rogers, Black Knight, Octopus

Post by Leoparis »

There are so many stories in M/C 1000 that it might be better to refer to them by the year in the red circle (you can always add 1938 to the story number to find the year)

Steve Rogers placement in M/C 1000 '1941'
Steve Rogers is accompanied by the old woman (from the curio shop) at the site of Project: Rebirth so this is after CA 176 3:5 and CA 255 4:2.
This is before CA 109 (13)-FB where she re-introduces him to Reinstein and disclose her disguise to him.
The sequence of events would go like this: Rogers is brought to the curio shop, she leads him past Project:Thunderer to a second room where Reinstein was waiting (he wouldn't wait in the front shop, exposed to view from outsiders, nor would agent-R remove her disguise there), she says "Come in, come in. We have been waiting for you" to urge him into that second room, the "we" refers to Project:Rebirth staff, then Reinstein leads him upstairs where Project:Rebirth is located.

AGENT R
CA 255 (4:1 - 4:2)-FB
*M/C 1000 /3 (1941)
CA 109 (13)-FB

M/C 1000 '1944' refers to the release of the Captain America serial. The iconic picture could be a poster from the movie. Disconnected from it, the text is Steve Rogers answering an interview question in the present. So this needs to be placed according to the text rather than the picture. The best way to reconcile the disconnected text and picture is to consider that Rogers gave that interview in front of a 1944 poster, possibly in his home since he has been known to collect such items.

M/C 1000 '1964'
We have a lot of flashbacks of Cap on ice. CA 215 (12:3)-FB is circa 1949, Cap is not yet encased in ice. CA:RW&B /10 (2 - 5) is later than that, he gets encased in ice. M/SAGA 1 is just before FF 1. CA:SL 11-FB is when the Human Torch fights the Acrobat disguised as Cap in 1963. Since this is 1964 this can be before the Avengers submarine finds him.

Reviewing that part, I see the need to make small changes. CA:RW&B /10 (6) is in the wrong place, it should be after Namor threw Cap's block of ice in water. A 4 (4:1) is missing. Here are my notes:
A 4 (3:3 - 3:8) block of ice unfreezing
CA:RW&B /10 (6) Avengers submarine closing in on Cap still in ice
A:EMH 1 (22:7) IM picks something on the radar (and they start looking out)
CA4 13 (12:1 Thor says, "Didst thou see someone out there floating in the currents?"
CA4 13 (12:2 Thor, "Yes, there." Wasp, "It's a man."
A 4 (4:1) missing from chronology, Thor tells IM to "Stop the engines, there is someone out there."
CA4 13 (12:3 - 14) Giant-Man increases his size.

Doctor Octopus
Since he has his origin so shortly after Spider-Man, this takes place shortly before ASM 3. SMU 3 establishes that Octopus was distraught about his mother's death when he had his accident so the story comes before that sequence leading to her death. SMU 3 18:2 re-uses a thought balloon from ASM 3 as dialog.

Black Knight in M/C 1000 '1955'
I see two different ways to place this. One is the 1955 date and the homage to Joe Maneely by Chris Weston. Maneely stops drawing stories in Black Knight 3. In #4 there is only a cover by him. Issue 5 is dated April 1956.
If the story belongs with the 1955 stories it would come between 3 and 4 or between 4 and 5.

The other possibility is a speculation based on the caption "The Guild would not end here, Sir Percy knew. One day, they would create their awful land--their land that knew no king. If not here... then elsewhere." If "knew" means "actually knew" rather than "was certain, firmly believed" (both are possible), it refers to his three time travels, there is one to England (still a monarchy in the present) in NXCAL 10-12, one in FF 405 very shortly in the Baxter Bldg, one in RR:S-FB in America where he's locked in an institution and would have time to learn the country has no king.

Yeah, this one is almost impossible to place in any meaningful way without context. So many Lokis (Male & female JMS/Coipel Lokis, Kid Loki, and two post-Kid Lokis are in the centre, but there's a whole bunch around the outside including a Simonson Loki, Ragnarok Loki, an early-Kirby Loki, another Coipel Loki and yet more indeterminate ones), this would just be scattered randomly around their chronologies.
StrayLamb wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:20 amM/C 1000/28 (Black Panther)
Any reason this can't be relatively current? I mean, obviously it can't be during the "Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda" thing, but it's definitely not during Priest's actual run (where Panther was bald & bearded).
StrayLamb wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:20 amM/C 1000/30 (Carol Danvers)
Again, relatively current? Danvers is Captain Marvel, with long, loose hair and no helmet-mask-mohawk thing in space. That limits it to the last couple of years, post-Life of Captain Marvel, straight away.
StrayLamb wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:20 amM/C 1000/36 (Mary Jane)
This isn't an MJ piece, it's the "Wolverine's debut as reality show" page. Very non-canon.

This also fits with the 1978 placement)
Um, it says "Should make a good training excercise for Weapon Alpha" for me.
StrayLamb wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:20 amM/C 1000/49 (Spidey)
Okay, this can't be recent - it implies this is the first time the thing has happened, and the montage of all the babies basically says there's been a lot of time since. His chest symbol is not meaningfully visible - I even looked up the original art, which Meltzer posted on Twitter, and while there's more of an indication of it than in the final version (where the colourist basically erased it), I still can't tell if it's the original "closed legs" or modern "splayed legs" version.

With no useful indicators other than "some significant time ago, standard SM costume", I'm tempted just to look for a placement in 1984, per the year on the strip, pre-black costume. Since Mike's Amazing World newstand says ASM 251 went on sale 3 Jan 1984, and ASM 252 (black costume debut) went on sale 31 Jan 1984, that would be immediately before Secret Wars, somewhere in this region:

ASM 251 (1 - 16)
WOSM 26
PPSSM 88
PPSSM 89-FB
PPSSM 89 (1 - 20:4)
ASM 251 (17 - 18:3)

PPSSM 88 was on-sale "13 Dec 1983", PPSSM 89 "17 Jan 1984".

So, how about literally immediately before Spider-Man heads off to Secret Wars and "gets his new black costume in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252" - i.e, just before ASM 251 (17 - 18:3)?

This is a direct follow-up to the framing sequence of IH 467, PAD & Adam Kubert's last issue - the room is almost identical, bar a few props which have been moved around/replaced, and future-Rick is drawn still older (to look like 2020 PAD...)
StrayLamb wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:20 amM/C 1000/62 (Rogue)
Well, Sage, Rogue & Gateway appear to be the "present day" of the piece - it's Sage's narration, I think Gateway might be showing the past scenes, or they might be purely figurative, and Rogue is at the front. And all three look as they did in X-Treme X-Men v1 (Claremont & Larroca's last collab).

Gateway appears only in XX 4 and XX '01 from that run. So somewhere around/between those two, maybe? Not that familiar with XX.

Uatu is alive, so before Original Sin (2014).

The headshots could be a montage rather than representing a specific point of time, so they don't necessarily help to narrow down, but past that...
  • Generic Spider-Man
  • Generic Thing
  • Wolverine appears to be in the yellow & blue he wore for most of 2004-2014. (He switches to his orange & black armoured costume in the 2014 volume of Wolverine, which leads into Death of...)
  • Reed Richards has a blue neck on his costume, not white or black. Was that ever the case before the current run? (They were wearing red & black c. Original Sin, following several years in white & black)
  • Cap is wearing his classic mask rather than his Marvel NOW! mask.
  • Iron Man's wearing red & gold, so before Marvel NOW!. Kinda hard to say beyond that, it's the general style of helmet he's worn for most of the last couple of decades.
  • When did Groot start being drawn with an underbite?
  • Mantis looks mostly like she has since Celestial Quest (green, actual antennae) but no tiara, and is talking informally rather than as "This One".
  • JMS is after Sins Past.
  • Hulk is Savage Hulk

The Loki story goes obviously somewhere during Kieron Gillen's run from Journey Into Mystery, ideally at a time when the artist is the same. It takes place in Loki's head. In that run he had placed the memories of his older self in a bird called Ikol, so he was facing identity issues.

At least two of the prominent Lokis are from post-JIM.

Tons of possibilities there: He's got some foreknowledge of the future and / or knowledge of alternate dimensions. It was the case for the Loki in Rodi/Ribic's Loki series circa 2004. Plus don't those post-JIM Lokis refer to teen Lokis? It might simply be that those were similar to pre-JIM Lokis that we had not yet seen. Loki must have been a teen between the times when he was a boy and those he were an adult before the recent age reversion.

We already have dreams in some sequences, I always took this one to be a dream, I don't mind if it's a dream with foreknowledge, and I place it at the time when Gillen and Braithwaite were on the JIM series. It provides artistic consistency, thematic consistency (can I escape my fate / change my nature?) and refers to Journey Into Mystery. (But not to 1952, I admit...) With only one Loki dreaming of his past selves, there is no need to include all appearing Lokis in the chronology.

Korvac

Post by Leoparis »

I've covered the flashbacks from IM6 9 last year. This is a 20-page story. I think your pages are off.

Apparently the latest Korvac is the intellect of the original in a synthezoid body, which is why he claims kinship with the original Human Torch. From later issues it's unclear whether he's entirely a copy or the original consciousness in a new body without his cosmic powers. Odd setup but probably coming from an intention to retell his story of getting godlike as a present narrative rather than as a flashback.
