The Hellfire Gala

I suspect, from this week's issues, that the Gala is going to be a particularly entertaining chronology puzzle... it takes place on "the evening of the summer solstice," which this year is Sunday, June 20. Here's what I've got so far; corrections are welcome!

FRIDAY:

WAY OF X 1 (9-13) Early in the day; Crucible is that night.

(14-17) That night, before Crucible.

(18-21) Crucible.

NEW MUTANTS 18 (4-19) is also Crucible, but possibly a different one. If it's the same one, then pg. 20 is probably the next morning. (I don't think we've seen Xi'an at the Gala yet.)

(Note: X-CORP 1 takes place on a Friday, but we don't yet know which Friday...)

SATURDAY:

WAY OF X 1 (22 - 27:2) Morning in Arbor Magna. Kurt talks to Charles, then goes back to his residence to sleep. (Nightcrawler is a daysleeper, I guess.)

MARAUDERS 20: On board the Mercury, the night before the Gala.

WAY OF X 1 (27:3 - 30) Apparently in the evening, Kurt wakes up and goes to Blindfold's grave site, where he meets David.
WAY OF X 2 (1-3) That scene continues.

SUNDAY:

WAY OF X 2 (4-20) "Middle of the day" on Krakoa. It's the day of the Gala, and Dazzler is doing her first set of the day. Kurt goes to Saudi Arabia, then returns to Krakoa.

X-FACTOR 9 (9-20) Dazzler does her second set of the day, then goes home to get ready for the Gala.

MARAUDERS 21 (1-3): Just before the Gala begins. Emma wearing crystal headdress.

MARAUDERS 21 (4) = X-FORCE 20 (1-2)

X-FORCE 20 (3-8) follows immediately on from that; so does MARAUDERS 21 (5-6).

Beware that Marvel has released online mini-stories, and some Instagram stories, which are part of the Hellfire Gala.
At the moment it seems to me that they exist only online and spread through social media, but if they are printed in some future collection it will be necessary to insert them chronologically.

Uhm... I think that there should be a break between X-FORCE 20 (4:2) (Iron Man just arrived, arguing with Kid Omega) and (4:3) (Wolverine at the dock, with Christian Frost receiving logic diamonds from Shi'Ar). Emma speaks with Shi'Ar ambassador and ask Christian to sort the gift in MARAUDERS 21 (14). Three pages later, Wolverine is at the party speaking with Captain America. Then in X-FORCE 20 (13), at 9:31 pm, he's on the shores, spotting Deadpool approaching. In X-FORCE 20 (4:2) Beast Beast arrives at Sage's control center. In MARAUDERS 21 (7:2), when the concert is starting, he's already there.

So, reviewing the sequence and dissecting it better to insert other sequences in the future:

• MARAUDERS 21 (1-4:5): guests begin to arrive (the invitation indicated 7 pm as the starting time).

• HELLIONS 12 (1-3): 7:29 pm, Mr Sinister, Havok and Psylocke go to the Gala.

• X-FORCE 20 (1-4:2) ~ MARAUDERS 21 (4:6-5:1): 7:40 pm, Iron Man arrives, argues con Kid Omega. Beast arrives at Sage's control center.

• MARAUDERS 21 (5-2-9): telepathic concert (Beast with Sage at control center, Emma's first outfit).

Thank you, Midnighter! Excellent catches. I added my take on today's issues of X-Men and Excalibur to your version, below... but not (yet) Children of the Atom #4, whose placement is confusing. (Pp. 1-4 are on a school day, on which the Gala has just become public knowledge; pp. 7-20 appear to be the next day, and oddly also appear to be the night of the Gala itself, but give off a strong "all is not as it seems" vibe, and the solicitation for #6 suggests that that issue coincides with the Gala.)

FRIDAY:

Yes, I would wait to place the events of Children of the Atoms.
However, pages 7-20 are the kids trying a backup plan (Cole's used jersey) in case they can't use the portals on the night of the Gala. So these are still events that precede the Gala.
Pages 1-4 are the day the Gala is announced.
Pages 7-20 are the next day and night, when it seems that Wolverine, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Storm, Nightcrawler, Pixie, Magma, and Maggot eventually appear at the end. These events should therefore take place before Friday which sees Nightcrawler and Pixie busy, at least.
But the next two issues will give more information.

This week's update--wow, the timetable seems to have been really elaborately worked out. Also, Planet-Size X-Men establishes that X-Corp #1 does indeed take place two days before the Gala.

WAY OF X 1 (9-13) Kurt and Magneto. Early in the day; Crucible is that night.

Oh yikes! Should be 21 throughout. Fixed now, I hope.

(Meanwhile, PSX 1 also notes that Arakko is being moved for "the second time in as many weeks"--which is to say that at most two weeks pass between X of Swords and the Hellfire Gala, apparently including the events of King in Black! I *think* that's doable on the X-books side--will dig into it--but if that's the case, it also means that we're definitely going to have to assume that some seasons are just topical references, since the Gala is on the "Summer Solstice" and King in Black is definitely tied to Christmas via the Dr. Doom/Iron Man one-shot...)

Uhm... Keep in mind that Krakoa (and so Arakko, I think) keeps moving across the sea, is not tied to a specific location. So two weeks ago could be a reference to a minor movement in the Pacific Ocean and not the travel from Otherworld

Believe it or not, the 14-day timeline seems to work! It actually can't be much more than that for some of the X-titles. The potentially complicating factors:

* King in Black. Midnighter, you kept a much closer eye on that event than I did: how long does the Knull blackout last?

* The Arcade/Mastermind sequence in Hellions, which keeps the team (notably Sinister and Kwannon) occupied for "a week"--let's, uh, call that a four-day week...

* The week between Siryn's two deaths; Prodigy sets up the body farm in X-Factor 6, after that, which happens soon enough before the Gala that it kind of scrunches New Mutants 15-18 into a two-day span.

* Cypher and Bei's honeymoon (which... apparently coincided with King in Black? Maybe they went to Chandilore too).

Here's what I've got, and corrections are very welcome, as always:


* DAY 1:

EXCALIBUR 16 (1-19): A full day on Krakoa, right after XoS.

X-MEN 16 (1-17): Cyclops, Cable, Prestige. Arakko transported through the External Gate. Then Cypher and Krakoa, then a Quiet Council meeting.

CABLE 7 (1-14): Begins on Krakoa at sunset very shortly after XoS. Then Philadelphia daytime, Bucks County that night.

MARAUDERS 16 (1): Storm and Bishop meet at sunset.

WOLVERINE 8/1: One evening.

EXCALIBUR 16 (20): The morning after the earlier part of the issue, in extradimensional England.

MARAUDERS 17 (18-20): Callisto resurrected; then Kate delivers an invitation to Verendi.

HELLIONS 7 (11-20): Hellions in Arizona.
HELLIONS 8: The same day.

X-MEN 20 (6-17, since pp. 1-5 are a FB to "several weeks" earlier, pre-XoS): Mystique's mission.

WOLVERINE 9 and 10 (1-13): Madripoor, a "few days" after Logan arrives.

X-FORCE 18 (8-20): Krakoa, the day after the previous scene. Sage kills Beast.

You'll have to dismiss the days shown as well, since the Gala is said to be Sunday night, and New Year's Eve 2020 was on a Thursday night. I'm not saying i have a problem with that - these X-books are being written like they're in their own universe, but they do have to fit in with the rest of the MU. The X-books have been out of synch with the rest of the MU on many previous occasions, so it's not at all unusual.

Maybe Krakoa is in the Southern Hemisphere during the Gala. Christmas and New Year are still after the Southern Hemisphere Summer Solstice, but at least that would make it Summer on Krakoa.

True enough! But there's no story reason the Gala has to be on a Sunday night, or even on the solstice--that's a topical reference in the sense that it has to do with when the story's published, and if it were changed it would affect the story not a bit--whereas the KiB Iron Man/Doctor Doom and Immortal Hulk one-shots have to happen around Christmas to make any sense.

Now, if there's no point for months after KiB (as far as the rest of the MU is concerned) when Namor, Steve Rogers, Reed Richards and Dr. Strange are all available at the same time, there'll be a problem...

(And, to be fair, there's also some wiggle room between the end of X of Swords proper and X-Men #16, during which Brand can set up the new version of S.W.O.R.D. But not a lot of wiggle room.)

Also note that Guardians of the Galaxy 15 (1-17) takes place the day before the Gala, and that Moondragon is noted as working on "this Korvac business" (with a footnote to Iron Man #8). It's "ten days" since Ego turned black (in GOTG6 13-14)--Day 3 on my timeline above.

Which is tricky, because in GOTG6 10, there's a line of dialogue to the effect that Knull has been reported by "that new SWORD station" to be on Earth, and then "three months" pass before the last couple of pages of GOTG6 12. Ignore that line, assume that Knull's forces are just making a slow journey across the galaxy to get to Earth, and the timing of everything else still works...

There's going to have to be a big ol' gap in X-Men somewhere between Empyre and X of Swords, and between #11 and 12 seems like the likeliest place; the Summoner's just going to have to be showing the kids a different game in the latter issue.

And the end of GOTG6 15 is "two days" after pp. 1-17 and leads into The Last Annihilation--which suggests that X of Swords, King in Black, the Hellfire Gala and The Last Annihilation all happen within the span of just a few weeks!
