Savage Sword of Conan v2 #1-5

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #1 [#236] (April 2019)
By Gerry Duggan & Ron Garney

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Ouroboros crew & slaves (inc Suty)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan, the only survivor of a battle between two pirate ships, floats in the ocean until he’s picked up by slavers bound for Stygia. When Conan wakes up he quickly frees himself and goes to the captain’s quarters to see if there’s any treasure. The captain turns out to be a serpent man; Conan kills him and takes an ornate chest. Conan jumps off the boat and swims to shore, pulling Suty along, another slave he’s chained to. Conan opens the chest to discover there’s only sand inside, but it shows him a map toward treasure and a vision that he will soon meet a beautiful adventurer and cross swords with a villain.

SYNOPSIS:

The snake wizard tries to take the map from Conan’s mind but Menes interferes and they escape, but not before Suty is poisoned. The trio go into the underground city beneath Kheshatta in search of the treasure but they’re quickly surrounded by zombies.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #4 [#239] (June 2019)
By Gerry Duggan & Ron Garney

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Suty, Menes, Koga Thun, Cult of Koga Thun, zombies

SYNOPSIS:
Conan and friends escape the zombies, but Koga Thun’s venom has corrupted Suty. Suty asks Conan to kill him so he does, but Koga Thun uses Suty’s corpse to attack Conan, poisoning him.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #5 [#240] (July 2019)
By Gerry Duggan & Ron Garney

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Suty (corpse), Menes, Koga Thun, Cult of Koga Thun, Stygians

SYNOPSIS:
Conan decapitates Suty’s corpse and continues toward the treasure with Menes, eventually finding an ancient ship. They find that the treasure is ancient scrolls of magic spells. Koga Thun appears and Menes reveals she’s working with the wizard, her family having been tied to him for generations. Conan attacks the wizard who prepares to kill Conan, but Menes jumps in the way to save him. Conan kills the wizard, decapitates him and sets the scrolls on fire. Returning above ground, Conan shows off Koga Thun’s head to the enslaved Stygians, inspiring them to revolt against the cultists. Conan wanders off.

NOTE:
Conan has experience with pirating and has been to Stygia before, so this is after his time with Bêlit. He starts in the Western Sea and ends up in Stygia. The first issue says that Conan is 20 years old here, but given that he’s familiar with pirating that’s plainly wrong. But, if we take it to mean that he’s young, then this is soon after his time with Bêlit, I suppose.

Conan leaves the Baluma in COB 105 and starts heading north through Stygia and ends up in Shem by COB 115. SAVSCO 87/2 is placed between COB 105-106 and happens in Kush. So after that and before COB 106 is a good spot for him to do some pirating in the Western Sea and end up back in Stygia.

SAVSCO2 3’s bear -FB is simple to place; almost any time before he leaves Cimmeria. The burning city one, though, could almost go anywhere. I like after M/SSPEC 9 for a stupid reason; Conan is 20 years old at that time.

Its stated many times in the original SSOC run that Conan joined Belit when he was 23 and he sailed with her for 3 years til he was 26.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #6 [#241] (August 2019)
By Meredith Finch & Luke Ross

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Thorgeir, a ship captain, slaves, Turanian army, Storm Crow staff and patrons, Akif residents (inc Mavia & her satrap), various warriors

SYNOPSIS:
At the Kezankian Pass between Zamora and Turan, Conan meets a friendly man, Thorgeir, in a tavern who gives him poisoned beer; as Conan passes out Thorgeir reveals that he’s Thorfel the Fair’s nephew and he plans to destroy Conan’s reputation. Conan’s put on a slaver ship bound for Akif to fight in a tournament for others to win a general’s daughter’s (Mavia) hand in marriage. Conan begins to shake the poison as he’s tossed in a gladiator ring in Akif. Adrenalin burns out the rest of the poison and Conan begins slaughtering the warriors; Mavia becomes smitten with Conan. Conan escapes and Mavia is heartbroken. Conan returns to the tavern and prepares to kill Thorgeir.

NOTE:
This is a sequel tale to one of my favorites: SAVT 4. Also, this happens roughly ten years after SAVT 4, making Conan roughly 30 years old here.

So, Conan’s roughly 30 and in Turan. I’ll say this happens after he parts ways with the Zuagirs after SAVSCO 35.

By Kim Zub & Patch Zircher

Conan, Maraudus Mahtir (corpse), Kyala, Kero the Callous, Shadrizar residents, a bear-like beast

SYNOPSIS:
Conan plays Serpent’s Bluff with Kero the Callous. He does poorly at first but then runs the table and gets all of Kero’s money. Kero asks for one more hand; if Conan wins he takes over Kero’s business but if Kero wins he gets all his money back. Conan agrees and of course loses. When the house tries to collect Mahtir’s debt Conan flies into a rage and kills a bunch of people, including Kero. Conan is eventually overpowered and he’s tossed into the pit with the bear-like beast.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #9
[#244] (November 2019)
By Kim Zub & Patch Zircher

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Kyala, Shadrizar residents, a bear-like beast

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SAVSCO2 7-8, no new information.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan kills the brute and swears revenge. Suddenly all the torches in the Demon’s Den go dark and the Godsend Gemstone starts aggressively glowing. Everyone is driven insane and starts killing each other. Conan uses the distraction to escape the pit. Conan kills the Demon’s Den manager and sets the place on fire. Outside, Conan again meets the beautiful woman. She reveals she caused the night’s chaos so she could retrieve the Godsend Gemstone, a piece of herself. When she crushes it she reveals herself to be Kyala, Goddess of Luck and Destiny. Conan stands up and wanders off.

NOTE:
When Kyala reveals herself, the narrator sez this: Conan is blinded by this awe-inspiring display of celestial power. His primal scream is swallowed by the raging storm of her majesty. :)

Conan is described as young and is still wearing his three-disc necklace thing. He’s already in Shadrizar here, having already arrived. Conan first visits Shadrizar in COB 6, where he loses his helmet. He’s still in Shadrizar in COB:HOA before moving on to the Road of Kings in COB 7.

For those interested, they also made a real-life Serpent’s Bluff card game and tell you how to pre-order it.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #10 [#245] (December 2019)
By ROY THOMAS & ALAN DAVIS!

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Simino, Guptar, Lady Serra, Zubair, Afghuli Hillmen (inc Pakim, Dhuul, Chupa, Desu)

SYNOPSIS:
Conan wins a barfight and is hired as a bodyguard by Lady Serra when she learns Conan killed the guy she intended to hire. She’s looking for her brother Lord Fallo, who went missing in the Himelian Mountains looking for treasure. Serra’s other bodyguard, Zubair, doesn’t want to hire Conan, but she does anyway. The next day they begin their journey. Conan reveals his ulterior motive when they run into the Afghuli Hillmen and he challenges their hetman for leadership. Instead of following the hill code, Pakim (the hetman) has Conan knocked out and tied to a tree then has Lady Serra show him where the treasure is.

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #11 [#246] (January 2020)
By ROY THOMAS & ALAN DAVIS!

APPEARANCES:
Conan, Lady Serra, Zubair, Afghuli Hillmen (inc Pakim, Dhuul, Helai, Chupa, Desu), Keepers of the Dark Crystal

SYNOPSIS:
Conan wakes up and destroys the tree he’s tied to to escape. Meanwhile, Lady Serra leads the Hillmen to a cave where the Dark Crystal is. Zubair reveals he’s a magician and knew what Serra was looking for, and her ring is the only thing that can make the Dark Crystal work. The Keepers of the Dark Crystal (bat-like humanoids) begin to awake as Conan arrives and kills Pakim. Zubair tries to kill Conan and Serra with a spell, so Conan throws his sword into Zubair’s throat. Conan tosses the Dark Crystal into a cavern and the Keepers follow it. Upset that she’s lost the Dark Crystal Serra stabs Conan and reveals she poisoned her brother. A Keeper grabs Serra, attracted to her ring. The cavern collapses and Conan starts to make his way back to the Hillmen.

NOTE:
Both issue’s have a note telling up this takes place before SAVSCO 16-19. Helpful! This tells how Conan became hetman of the Afgulis, and he already is in SAVSCO 85-86 (which happens before SAVSCO 16-19), so before that, then.

Can you believe Roy Thomas and Alan Davis had never worked together before this story?

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN v2 #12 [#247] (February 2020)
By Frank Tieri & Andrea Di Vito

APPEARANCES:
Conan (also in fb), Amoth/”Tama” (also in fb) & her followers (in fb), Saleria (also in fb) & her fellow priests (also in fb), Argosseans (also in fb)

FLASHBACK:
In Argos, Conan meets a little girl named Tama who has an iron collar on her neck. As he searches for a way to remove it she’s abducted by people in red cloaks (days ago). Followers of the demon Amoth summon her to this world to kill their enemies in Argos, but Saleria and her fellow priests manage to put a collar on her to keep her in a lesser form, diminishing her powers. She escapes in this form and runs into Conan.
SYNOPSIS:
Conan searches for the missing girl and finds her. He attacks the priests surrounding her and kills all but one. Conan is confused when the girl grabs a knife and runs away. The surviving priest, Saleria, tells Conan the “girl’s” story. They team up to get the collar back on the demon, then toss her into a volcano.

NOTE:
The story starts in Argos, travels to the Kothian Hills and ends back in Argos.

Some stories where Conan is in or around Argos (not while pirating) are SAVSCO 101, M/GN:COBSOS, CO:ROS 1-3, SAVSCO 66 (all in one block), and then SAVSCO 107 shortly before he becomes king.

Re: Savage Sword of Conan v2 #7-9

Conan first visits Shadizar in COB 6, where he loses his helmet. He’s still in Shadrizar in COB:HOA before moving on to the Road of Kings in COB 7.

I would slightly adjust your placement here, and place SAVSCO2 7-9 before COB:HOA rather than after. At the end of HOA, Conan is riding away from Shadizar, and Thomas' chronology tells us "at this point, the young Cimmerian decides that Shadizar is not for him". To me, this is a clear indication that HOA should be the last Shadizar story in this sequence (although several of the other Shadizar stories placed here have a similar ending, Thomas' chronology specifically tells us that each time he heads back into the city.

This alternate placement also makes more sense narratively:
COB 6 - ends with Conan being robbed and heading away from Shadizar.
COSAV 8/2 - an adventure "half a day's ride" from Shadizar, that again results in no profit for Conan
SAVSCO2 7
SAVSCO2 8
SAVSCO2 9

COB:HOA - Conan's final adventure in Shadizar

In SAVSCO2 7 Conan comments that his purse "is lighter than I'd like", which would make sense following COB 6 and COSAV 8/2, and SAVSCO2 8 tells us Conan has been in the city long enough to comment "you're clearly not from round here", discounting the validity of any earlier placement.

As always, let me know what you think!
