Captain America & Nick Fury DR:NN and D-Day

Post by Leoparis »

In Aug 2020, I started looking at D-Day stories. Very soon I noticed I had too many Captain Americas:
One who is already in France and sabotages guns (CA 109);
One who lands with regular troops (CATOW:ATB);
One who lands with the Howling Commandos (DR:NN).

So after envisaging and then dismissing how he could do all three, I started to look at various solutions and settled on time-displaced Captain Americas. There is no shortage of those. I found one in IH2 284 and then another in CA:BB who could fill up these roles.

DR:NN however contradicted Nick Fury's D-Day history as well. In SGTF@ 2 (1 - 15) Fury is parachuted for a commando action behind the lines and then aims for Omaha Beach to help landing troops there.

So I re-read the issues and noticed that there is no mention of the place where the landing takes place in DR:NN nor in its retelling in SECWARR 17.

I had earlier considered using the D-Day rehearsal operation but I don't think it fits. Operation Tiger mostly involved untrained troops and the British beach did not have blockhauses.

So I started to look for other landings and there is one that occurred in France and was supposed to take place at the same time as the Normandy landing. This is the Provence landing of Aug 15, 1944, Operation Dragoon. This is the forgotten landing per the broadcast in the link. Per CA5 3 (16 - 18:1)-FB Cap must have been involved in Operation Dragoon since he says he worked his way from the South [of France].

Per the AbleCompanyBase site, the Howling Commandos and Cap are available on Aug 15. But maybe Col Fury will want to move SGTF 79 later (the newspaper dated Aug 14 on page 1 sports an Oct 8 date for the trial and SGTF 79 starts with the trial so this is an older newspaper and SGTF 79 takes place on Oct 8). The events of SGTF 78 must have occurred before Aug 14 so the Provence landing is between SGTF 78 and 79, shortly after 78 as some Fury appearances might come in between.

As noted by michel, SECWARR 17-FB-FB is a shorter retelling of DR:NN-FB and needs to be replaced by the original issue.

This relocating of DR:NN gives proper priority to silver age stories, CA 109 and SGTF@ 2.

[[[CLICK & DRAG: Note: There will probably be more corrections needed for Cap for Aug 1944. Per the current listing Aug 15 takes place between CA '01 (Aug 2) and CA6 1 (Paris liberated, Aug 26) but also between TOS 77 (German army stuck in falaise gap, St Malo pocket, Aug 14, end of Battle of Normandy) and CA5 3 (16 - 18:1)-FB (working his way up from south after Operation Dragoon).
Current uncorrected listing:
CA:REBORN 2 (1 - 6) 1944 "old keep" Red Skull bts, Master Man (should follow from Reborn 1 (29-30))
CA '01-FB (2 Aug 44, Pacific) cf. CAC 42
CA6 1-FB "France may be liberated", Paris 1944, Fury, Dugan, Peggy Carter
CA6 2-FB Dugan
TOS 75/2-FB final date w/ Peggy
CA5 25 (3)-FB undated, French town Invaders
TOS 77/2 (3 - 5)-FB German army desperate to fight its way out of the falaise gap, countryside
CA5 3 (16 - 18:1)-FB Paris, Operation Dragoon from Aug 15, working way up from south, Oradour June 10, 1944
CA5 25 (7:2 - 7:3)-FB-FB w French Resistance Peggy
CA5 49-FB-FB Cap & Peggy
TOS 77/2 (6 - 10:6)-FB German forces evacuating Paris, Peggy does not get to see Cap (3 - 5)
CA5 3 (18:2)-FB Parade on Champs Elysées, Aug 26 or 29, 1944 Invaders
CA5 37-FB (parading in Paris, Bucky, Aug 26 or 29, 1944)
