CAGE 5-8

Post by Antonio Gaviño »

Only four characters appear on the “now’ portion of CAGE 5, Luke Cage, Micky Hamilton, Power Man (Steele) and Noah Burstein; everyone else shows up in flashback segments ranging from 9 days to 20 minutes ago; the four characters mentioned also appear in the flashbacks. Chronologies for most of the characters appearing in the issue need to be corrected accordingly, including Mr. Drewston’s voice only appearance, which is also within a flashback, this one to seven days ago (I had not checked CAGE 5 thoroughly when I wrote my previous post about this series).

On that note, we also have, from the MCP Stylebook:
BTS-The character does not appear on panel, but

e. another character on panel is acting under their direct orders. In this last case, only the first appearance of the on-panel character under orders warrants a BTS appearance, unless it is clear that the on-panel character CONTINUES to operate under direct orders in subsequent appearances.
Noah Burstein first appears in issue 5 in the ‘three hours ago’ flashback segment, and he is at that point under direct orders from Cruz Bushmaster, as one of his colleagues points out ’he (Cruz) will be mad’ for Noah not getting the desired results with the serum they just tried on a subject. So, Bushmaster’s behind the scenes appearance should also have the flashback notation.
Bushmaster is not just behind the scenes in CAGE 6 and 7, he does actually appear watching the testing area through a glass window from the upper chambers. He gives an order to Power Man (Steele) on page 14 panel 7 of issue 6. He is there on page 11 panel 3 of issue 7, responding when Luke asks Hardcore about the identity of his employer; his darkened silhouette is seen at various times throughout this issue as well. He appears in issue 8 too, escaping with Hardcore (who calls him his leader) in a helicopter on the third panel of the double page spread of pages 2 and 3.

Again, from the MCP Stylebook:
BTS-The character does not appear on panel, but

b. we are told on panel of the specific CURRENT wherabouts or actions of the character; …
In CAGE 6, Noah Burstein reveals his wife Emma is being kept captive by Cruz Bushmaster and threatened to be killed unless her husband cooperates in the effort to recreate the Power Man formula. She is therefore behind the scenes in this issue.

On page 8 panel 3 of CAGE 7 the West Coast Avengers arrive in Colorado. As they fly down to a valley, Iron Man mentions to USAgent and Wonder Man, “the others’ll stay with the quinjet until we assess the scenario”. The quinjet is seen flying on behind them. In issue 8 it is revealed that the Living Lightning, the Scarlet Witch and the Vision are the other Avengers coming along for the mission; they are given behind the scenes appearances for issue 8 but should also get them for issue 7 since they are the “others” Iron Man mentions staying with the quinjet.

In blue are the changes suggested on my previous post that seem to have been approved but haven’t been implemented yet.
