AFSY 1000/1

Post by Leoparis »

In this story Spider-Man stops an opportunistic burglar, Frankie Fama, who takes advantage of NYC invasions to burglarize places.
The story apparently takes place during WOTR. We see previous invasion flashbacks involving: Galactus; a demonic invasion; a Sentinels invasion at night; a Skrull invasion. Fama ages significantly from panel to panel.

Frost Giants in the streets, Thor flying by.
Fama, "Why are you here? I saw you fighting one of those giant popsicles."

In WOTR 1 Thor leaves Earth on page 10. Spider-Man appears on page 14 stating it has been a quiet day. The invasion starts on pages 18-19. Thor returns to Earth in WOTR 5 and not in NYC at that. To my knowledge, there is no other recent frost giants invasion that can account for Fama's aging.

For the sake of chronology, I will consider the Thor section in WOTR 1 (7 - 10) concurrent with later pages (14 - 19).

WOTR 1 (18-19) invasion > Thor leaves > Spidey fights a frost giant and then captures Fama.

Due to the significant aging of Fama, the Galactus invasion has to be the first (FF 48-50).

The Sentinels invasion cannot be X 14-16 since that took place before FF 48-50 and Fama has gained some wrinkles. So it has to be X 98. (Unless there is some later nighly invasion by Sentinels...)

Which means the demonic invasion cannot be Inferno. There is a demonic invasion in A 118. The demons in A 118 are different from the flying demons from AFSY. No other fitting demonic invasion comes to my mind. (Astonishing Tales 23-24 takes place in Los Angeles; Marvel Premiere 8 in Stonehenge; Marvel Spotlight 15 in St Louis.)
Suggestions welcome.

The Skrull invasion doesn't match too well. Spider-Man is away from NYC with the Avengers the whole time and only lands in Central Park for the final fight vs Skrulls. Indeed Spidey is missing in most of the Secret Invasion: Amazing Spider-Man mini-series. Also the Skrulls are regular Skrulls in AFSY and super-Skrulls in SECINV.

I have found another Skrull incursion in YA 12. Spidey is not seen between pages 11 & 15. He could catch Fama while the parley is going on between pages 13 & 14.

Good work! The Sentinel invasion in X 98 is on Christmas (same as M/TE 13 and ASM 166 page 18), and Matt Murdock appears in M/TE 13 after X 98. So for Spidey it should look like this:

ASM 165
ASM 166 (1 - 17)
AFSY 1000 (3:4)-FB-OP
M/TE 13
ASM 166 (18)

Nice. Added to the War of the Realms Chronology.
Out in the Land Down-Under, beneath a rocky outcrop, deep within the back paddock, dwells the Stray Lamb.

I made another try to find demons or creatures matching those in AFSY 1000/1 (3:3) without success. Thor 233-234 has an invasion of Asgardians on horses. The demonic invasion in Defenders 60 is too late and is in Mexico.

I'm going to say these can be the alien gargoyles in Astonishing Tales 22-23 (Feb-Apr 1974). While that story takes place in Los Angeles, the narrative in 22 makes it clear the gargoyles have plans to attack NYC, destroy its bridges and conquer the UN building.

The demons in Marvel Spotlight 15 (May 74) are also around that time.

Since there is nothing tying Astonishing Tales to the rest of the Marvel universe, it can take place circa A 118 (Dec 1973) and I don't have to change the suggestion.

I did not analyse the present part with the Enforcers. I'm not sure what "Three to five later" means, hours? days? weeks? months?

Somebody else has been working on the series with proper analysis format and found placements so I turned my attention elsewhere.
